This definitely does not look right. It should have given you some info about baud rates, which UART is in the port etc. It may not be your modem that's giving you the trouble but the ports. I'm sorry I can give no more directions. I hope somebody else on the list can.

In the /etc/modules.conf are the above lines commented out or not? If you have recompiled the kernel with the serial routines compiled into the Kernel then I think you need to set them off as below alias char-major-4 off alias char-major-5 off If you are using modules then they should be set as follows alias char-major-4 serial alias char-major-5 serial The other thing to check if the serial ports are on the motherboard. Use command cat /proc/tty/driver/serial to list the serial devices. Extract from my machine shown below. merlin:/usr/local # cat /proc/tty/driver/serial serinfo:1.0 driver:4.27 0: uart:16550A port:3F8 irq:4 baud:2400 tx:8262180 rx:45660015 RTS|CTS|DTR|CD 1: uart:16550A port:2F8 irq:3 baud:115200 tx:16139617 rx:235581846 brk:11 oe:6 RTS|CTS|DTR|DSR|CD 2: uart:unknown port:3E8 irq:4 3: uart:unknown port:2E8 irq:3 Hope this helps Graham Smith ---------------------------------- -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I have serial support compiled as a module and in order to get my serial ports in order I had to comment out those lines. # alias char-major-4 serial # alias char-major-5 serial Just setting them to 'off' didn't do it for me, oddly enough. -- Yatsen Ng Den Haag, The Netherlands yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 95 or better".
