Greetings! My file server has a K6-2 motherboard that I'm going to replace with an Athlon motherboard. I have the system drive connected to the motherboard IDE controller, and two drives in a software RAID-1 configuration connected to a IDE controller card. I'm using SuSE 9.1 with the default kernal. In the past, I have swapped motherboards of similar types (e.g., Socket 7) without complications. Are there any special issues when swapping motherboards of different types? Thanks! Normally it should work and the system will start.

After I switched out the Socket 7 motherboard for an Athlon motherboard, and booted up the system hard drive, the partition with the root directory couldn't be found. Which was strange since the linux installer recognized the partitions correctly, and I was able to reinstall without modifying the partition table (which left the home directory partition intact and useable). I had no problems with the RAID-1 configuration since I was using the same PCI controller card. Thanks! Christopher

I just did it last nite. Went from an ABIT (with the cap problem) Duron 950 to ASUS with pentium III @ 800. I had two problems. Video and memory. Solved video by going to init 3 and running sax2 to get display going, then solved the memory problem by learning to wait! I went from 1+ Gig mem to 128Meg ram. With 9.1 it was sloooooooow. Upping to 175Megs helped. Gotta find me a good mb for this one soon. Suse found all the hardware changes and asked me to upgrade/update sw to accomodate the new mb & hardware.. Real nice.
