Help for SMC2835W wireless PCMCIA requested
Hello, I'm trying to use the SMC2835W with SuSE 9.1, without success. I downloaded the firmware 1.0.4.3 and installed it in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and changed its name into isl3890 (as instructed). But, when I insert the card in its slot, then I get : eth1: prism54 driver detected card model: PRISM Duette/GT eth1: islpci_open() eth1: resetting device... eth1: uploading firmware... eth1: firmware uploaded done, now triggering reset... eth1: device soft reset timed out eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response 1000, trigging device eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response 1000, trigging device eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response 1000, trigging device eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response 1000, trigging device eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response eth1: mgmt tx queue is still full eth1: mgt_commit has failed. Restart the device eth1: mgmt tx queue is still full Nothing happens, the led's on the card remain dark and I cannot get to it with any command at all. When I unplug the card, I get : eth1: no IPv6 routers present eth1: hot unplug detected eth1: removing device eth1: islpci_close () And after a while, I see : unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth1 to become free. Usage count = 6 Assuming someone else called the IRQ last message repeated 2 times unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth1 to become free. Usage count = 6 unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth1 to become free. Usage count = 6 etc. etc. Subsequently, inserting my "old' 802.11b card (which always works fine) also leads to nothing. The system doesn't even react. Has probably to do with the "waiting for eth1 to become free." message ?? So, I decide to reboot, but then I get a system hang after the message : Shutting down sound driver. Nothing happens any further, I have to cut power (which I don't like at all) ! Does anyone know what might be going on here and how to resolve this ? TIA and HAND, -- Jan Elders the Netherlands http://www.xs4all.nl/~jrme/ "Home of the Network Acronyms"
Maybe I should add that this card has a PrismGT chip, and that I am running the prism54 driver version 1.1 On Saturday 06 November 2004 18:07, Jan Elders wrote:

Well apparently nobody has been able to help me. But ....although I could not solve this particular problem, I found a very good alternative solution. For those who will stumble over this problem in the future and find this thread, here's what I did : 1. Download “DriverLoader” from http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/wlan/full/downloads.php (DriverLoader is a compatibility-wrapper allowing standard Windows NDIS (Network Driver Interface Specification) drivers shipped by hardware vendors to be used as-is on Linux x86 systems.) 2. Install driverloader 3. Run "dldrconfig" to complete the installation, enter license information, or to change the device's configuration. 4. Point browser to: http://127.0.0.1:18020/ and login as "root" to complete the installation. 5. Supply DriverLoader with a copy of the .INF and .SYS files from the vendor's driver (available on the CDROM which came with the product or from their website) 6. Provide a valid license key, available from http://www.linuxant.com/store/. 7. Now the card is known as “wlan0” and you can configure it according to your needs. Enjoy.
