Anyone using Red Carpet with SuSE?
Is anyone using Ximian's Red Carpet with SuSE? Any good? Jamie -- Jamie O'Shaughnessy jamie.oshaughnessy@ntlworld.com

What do you mean by "Any good". It is a way (appears to be the only way) to upgrade packages that have been installed from ximian.com. You can also use it to install non-ximian packages such as StarOffice and Opera. Dependancy checking seems to work in that whatever packages RedCarpet does install on my computer does work after the installation. It seems to work as well as SuSE YOU, perhaps even a little better than YOU. I prefer the layout of RedCarpet, and RedCarpet only shows the new or updated packages not every package on the FTP as YOU seems to do. The content of RedCarpet is controlled by ximian and the packages that you can access by RedCarpet are determined by ximian. Dumb but semi-relevant question; does YOU work with SuSE XFree86 Updates, LinuKS, and GNOMES? These are all optional packages, and it's a trivial process to FTP the RPMs locally and install them, but YOU should make some effort to make this stuff work. Seems to me that by keeping your kernel, X, and "DE" applications up-to-date, your systems would be most functional and useful to your users... ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? No it doesn't, only the mainline fixes and things. I'd prefer it if it did work with the optional packages. Jamie -- Jamie O'Shaughnessy jamie.oshaughnessy@ntlworld.com

I couldn't stand it. I tried it a couple of weeks ago in the hopes of finding something good. It likes to stick it's nose where it doesn't belong and tries to 'update' packages that need no updating, even when I specifically tell it to leave it alone. For some reason they like it when their name appears throughout the RPM DB. Of course, I should also mention that it trashed my RPM database. A simple 'rpm --rebuilddb' fixed it but it shouldn't have happened. YOU has never failed on me and it usually makes the right decisions. If I want to override something, it lets me. I also have trouble trusting Ximian with libraries that a lot of packages in SuSE depend on... After all of that, the amount of available software is miniscule. You have your choice of: - GNOME (well duh) - Loki demos (big deal, loki_update works much better and can flip mirrors on the fly) - StarOffice (Hmm, it's already in SuSE...) - Updates (not nearly as comprehensive and up-to-date as YOU) Some people (ie: GNOME users) may like it and won't have any dependency troubles if they simply don't use certain non-GNOME software. Personally, I feel more comfortable getting stuff from SuSE, than from Ximian, who does the SuSE stuff as an afterthought. -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com

Yes, I've found YOU has saved me a lot of time and I like it. Pity it doesn't work for the optional updates (KDE, GNOME, etc.)

Well, this is a concern.

Yes, I wasn't expecting a great deal. In fact my only interest in it was for Gnome. Ximian's build of Gnome includes the Palm Pilot support and they are much more upto date with things like Galeon, Evolution, etc. than SuSE. As I'm mainly a Gnome user, I thought it may be worth the effort to try Red Carpet for dealing with my Gnome stuff.

Yes, I'd prefer it if I could get the same things from SuSE. I reckon what SuSE should do is develop YOU to be a more complete tool, do much more regular updates of their packages (between distribution versions) and then charge an annual fee for access to such non-essential (i.e. more than current YOU does) updates. I'd pay an annual charge for this and it wouldn't force users to do it, just an optional extra (and would be another revenue stream for SuSE).
