Changing directory.
I have SuSe 9.3 Pro and I am just learning to use it. I need to change the working directory from with in Shell but I can't find any help on this so can someone please advise what I am to do. I log into Shell as su, then need to change to the directory My Dowloads. I get an error directory doesn't exist so I know I'm doing it wrong. Please help, Thanks Alan

cd is the command to change directories from the command line: help cd will give a basic explanation of usage.

Do you realize that you are logging in as 'root', the system administrator account? You may cause grave problems to your system IF you do not know what you are doing> My Downloads contains a space which is a parameter separator or deliminator on the command line. You must enclose the directory name containing spaces in quotations or *escape* the space so the command knows the space is *not* a deliminator. ie: "My Downloads" or My\ Downloads You should (must) spend some time reading the wonderful manual which came with your distro, "SUSE LINUX User Guide", to gain a basic understanding of the "nix way". -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

Here are a few other variables that might help you $HOME = your home directory $PWD = present working directory .. = takes you up one level That being said, I'm wondering why you are logging in as su. Unless you need to install software system-wide, your basic account should do.
