wvdial instead of kinternet?
As kinternet sometimes hangs during or after getting email I studied the alternative wvdial. Somebody on the list meant that wvdial was without this kind of problems and after setting it up it ran without trouble. Read the man pages concerning wvdial and did the configuration. Trying to run wvdial I get following info: Can't read config file /etc/wvdial.conf: Permission denied /etc/wvdial.conf is owned by root/root What should it be in order to get wvdial working?

What should it be in order to get wvdial working? The permissions have to be changed to 'root.dialout' and you will succeed.

Did that, quit kinternet and asked kmail to check Mail in. Got the info Error unknown host pop.indo.net.id (my isp). Something does not seem so right. What did I do wrong. And when the wvdial runs, how do I stop the connection if I think it has been long enough for my dial up connection?

Two ways. Make /usr/sbin/pppd suid, and edit /etc/permissions.local: /usr/sbin/pppd root.dialout 6754 or do the same to wvdial instead (not tested by me). or do it with sudo (better, but not tested). Mmm, that's three ways... -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

kinternet/smpppd uses wvdial to connect. Are you sure?? Both kinternet & kppp don't connect nearly as fast as wvdial does. Kinternet, especially, is an exercise in patience when trying to connect. ISDN takes nearly a full minute, whereas wvdial takes roughly 7 seconds --which is still slower than 'another OS' I used to use but tolerable, none the less.

I see you have stupid mode set in wvdial.conf, probably you don't have it in kinternet (and, consequently, the temporary wvdial.conf that it uses that you may find in /var/run/smpppd)

Quite sure Perhaps that is why I was having so much trouble with kppp & kinternet, then. You remove two cards from the stack & it becomes more stable...? I was never able to sustain a connection w/anything else.

I tried both stupid & non-stupid & settled w/stupid though I don't remember exactly why. <LOL> I do know that wvdial, in general, has kept me connected over days, unlike kppp or kinternet. In the last month the only time I've been disconnected is when I chose to close the connection for whatever reason - --except for two drops for which I had to unplug the modem to reset it before it would connect. I suppose different boxes demonstrate different behaviour patterns, but this is how mine works best. :-) - -- ...CH Avoid doing business with 'The Link' ISP. I never mentioned kppp. As far as I know it has its own code. I'm talking about kinternet/smpppd

Thanks for the help. Got finally connected after disconnecting stupid mode. I had stupid mode with kinternet and no big problems, with wvdial is does not even get starting making a connection. As I am at the end of some pieces of barbed or other high quality telephone line I would like to use the enabling the automatic reconnect which is automatically disabled. Entered Auto Reconnect = 1 but no effects. anybody know how to enable?

Actually, I think I deleted that option, then saved the file.
