Anyone know how to wake up a sleeping PC remotely? The PC is with an Intel 10/100 ethernet card with WOL. Is there anything special needed to be set or install on the remote PC? and the local calling PC? I need to work on this for my remote site deployment in our off-site offices connected through WAN. As I understand it there are two types of WOL. One simply looks for any activity on the network (which is OK if you have it connected to a switch, but a hub will keep it awake). The other (and probably more common ) is magic packet, where the nic is looking for, well, a magic packet. You can find out more about it here. http://www.amd.com/products/npd/overview/20212.html Implementations of sending a magic packet vary. There are several that you can get on the web. Here are two (one in C the other in perl). http://www.han.de/~gero/netboot/archive/msg02498.html http://www.han.de/~gero/netboot/archive/msg02483.html I found these with a quick google search. For the machine receiving the packet, it must support WOL in the bios and have an atx power supply in addition to a WOL nic. No special software is necessary.
