Sometimes when i boot up my machine i see this 'updatedb' process in the background.What does this do?
It updates the database of files on your system for the command "locate", as in "locate modules.conf" --> returns /etc/modules.conf. See man updatedb this is a tool used to update a database file on your machine which holds data for locate try typing locate pine locate will scan your database file and output locations of all instances it finds pine locate is a handy tool and runs daily, if you install new softwre and want to find where it is, type locate myquerry if updatedb hasnt yet run the new software wont show up, so in that case you type updatedb and updatedb scans and builds a new index have fun rob ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nachiket wrote:
