8.1 freezing up random times
I've used Suse since 6.2? and have always been impressed by it's reliability. However, ... A couple weeks ago I did a fresh install of 8.1 (replacing my 8.0) and since then the system freezes up 1-3 times a day. There is no response to keyboard or mouse and I can't telnet in from another computer. The freeze ups appear to be random; for awhile I thought it might be mouse related because it seemed to occur on a mouse selection but since then the system has frozen at least three times w/o mouse activity. About all I can say is it so far has not occured within first hour or two of reboot and I _think_ konqueror is usually running (but then again, I almost always have a browser window open...). I've run YOU several times so presumably I'm running the latest and greatest patches. Can anyone give a suggestion on how to track down problem? So far I've been lucky with no apparent system corruption (been using ReiserFS) but these lockups are getting pretty frustrating. TIA, Patrick

Did you update the kernel? This supposedly fixed the problem for most people. I'm not sure of the actual cause of the problem though. -- Franklin Maurer nebbish@sprynet.com Using SuSE 8.1

In my case the kernel that shipped w/ SuSE 8.1 had serious problems w/ my via southbridge. It actually worked fine until I started moving my IDE hard drives around while trying to get DMA working. Symptoms were as you report, You can check /var/log/boot.msg to see if your problem is the same Look for an error around this area <4>VP_IDE: chipset revision 6 <4>VP_IDE: not 100%% native mode: will probe irqs later <6>VP_IDE: VIA vt8235 (rev 00) IDE UDMA133 controller on pci00:11.1 If it says something about unrecognized southbridge... <4>VP_IDE: Unknown VIA SouthBridge, contact Vojtech Pavlik then you need the new kernel. (my mb is msi KT333Ultra2, via chipset) SuSE kernel 2.4.19-115 finally fixed it but not before I had totally hosed my system. good luck -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
Patrick, I have been experiencing the very same problems. I updated from 8.0 to SuSE8.1 about a month ago now. I have as yet been unable to absolutely identify the root cause but so far it seems to be associated with the nvidea drivers for my LCD display. I had added no new hardware since 8.0 but when I did an upgrade to 8.1, my old nvidea drivers would not allow the Xserver to start and I used yast online to upgrade to a later version. Having so done, the Xserver now works. Viewing my system log after a reboot, a kernel panic is noted with a link to illegal instruction call to nvidea driver. That's as far as I am at the moment. If you had browsed the archives, you'd have seen tons of emails in this list about that problem :-) Ok, either use the option "barrier=none" on all reiserfs partitions (/etc/fstab), or upgrade the kernel. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
I had the very same problem when I installed SuSE 8.1. Turns out that it's a known problem with the kernel that ships with 8.1. Apparently, random lockups can occur. Supposedly, it has something to do with having more than one IDE device (drive?) on your system. Simply upgrade your kernel to: k_deflt-2.4.19-174 (if you have an Intel cpu). You can do the upgrade through YOU. Rick On Mon, 2003-02-03 at 12:35, Patrick J. Hays wrote:
