[opensuse] Latest nvidia driver 310.40....

That's not enough, you need to unload (rmmod) old nvidia kernel driver first. Or does installer now do it for you? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am bit confused here about what you are asking. For quite some time now when one installs the latest driver, nVidia gives you a message stating that you already have a driver and do you want to replace it. You answer YES, and the installation proceeds. At the same time, if you have the nouveau driver installed, the nVidia driver tells that the nouveau is incompatible with the driver you are about to install and asks you if you want to get rid of it. This has been so for some time as well. So, which part of all of this am I misunderstanding in your question? When you do init 3 and install new driver old kernel module is still loaded. When you try init 5 now it fails due to version mismatch. To be able to return to init 5 without reboot old kernel module need to be unloaded first -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No. When you try to install the new driver nvidia tells you that there is an existing driver and do you want to delete it.

No. When you do init 5 you get the new driver.

No. The only time you may need to do is when you have the nouveau driver installed. When you install the nvidia driver it creates a file which removes this nouveau driver and one may need to reboot in order for this created file remove the nouveau driver before proceeding with the installation of the nvidia driver. Score: 0 out of 3 :-) .
