[SLE] samba network server locking up an big file transfers
Hi folkd, got a samba/nfs server that locks up when copy/transfering large files. Small files copy ok. Large files just sort of hang up , both on both ends. on the machine (client) the copy procedure just hangs and the process menter just sticks there. One the server end it locks up. This happens under both linux and windows clients. Samba server is a P166 w suse 6.3 usa 6 cd distro , lynkys 100/10 TP ethernet and a linksys 100/10 hub. Any ideas where to start ? cable , cards , ect.... Thanks. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
What's the windows configuration? I had a similar problem with a Windows 95
system and ISA network card. I upgraded that system to Windows 98 and a PCI
network card, and it works fine now.

I remember i had the same problem a few years ago. Didn't use Linux at that time. I had a NT-server and a few win95 clients. The server was also used as a dialup server to the Internet. I had read somewhere how to "tune" the dialup connection and get a better throughput. This was done by changing the value of MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) and RWIN (Receive Windows?) in the windows registry. If i remember correctly MTU was set to 1500 by default. Changing this value to 576 would increase the speed. I didn't edit the registry by hand but downloaded a utility that could do this for me. Soon after changing the value i experienced the same problems you are describing. The utility had changed not only this value for the dialup connection but also for for the network. Changing this value back to default solved this annoying problem. I don't know if this could also be a problem in your setup with Linux and don't want to put you on the wrong track, but maybe it is worth checking. Needless to say checking your cabling and hardware would be your first step. Let me know how thing go. I have just started having this problem. I used to have just two machines (one win and one Linux) networked with just one BNC cable, everything went fine. As I have just added another couple of machines, I have upgraded the network to a hub and RJ45 cables, and this problem has just started to happen. I have noticed that it always happens when the utilisation LED's on my hub go up to 100% for more than a few seconds. It only happens when going from win -> Linux not the otherway round. I normally have to reboot windows to resume normal operation. This happens on both windows and linus , either way. I have a cable somewhere here , need to find it and swat it and see it itt still happens. Is I will need to buy another nw card and swap that. if it dooes not help then I can go to my old 4 port hub and rule out the hub , the extraz card I can slap inot another machine. Had a couple 10 mgcards , and I have been using thm on the low end machines ie print server and firwall as thy wont take advantage of the higher speed, Still using idal up for internat access. the last time i setup samba, i used 'swat' for some reason, and i started having this problem. really boggled me since i've had samba working many times before. i ended up commenting out the socket options swat had put in there, and its worked great ever since. -- ======================================================================== Rocky McGaugh Atipa Linux Solutions Product Development www.atipa.com rocky@smluc.org rmcgaugh@atipa.com ========================================================================

I hand edited the newer sample suse smb.conf file and just changed som stuff. Will try this out later , easier that fumbling with the hardware. I moved to rg45 and 100 megbit hub/cards simply couse the thin ethernet was geting very out of wack and taking too much time fumblingwith. This is the first time I have ahd truble over the last year. Luckly some of the older card have the rg48 modulat plug on the back , so they do come in handy for low demand stuff. At 03:51 PM 4/4/2000 -0500, Rocky McGaugh wrote:
