[opensuse] inode exist - file does not
Hello, I have a strange problem. ls shows the file and its size etc, also stat gives me the inode number etc., but if I try to open it or use file to see what it is, I get "No such file or directory" Where should I look for the problem? tks 2.6.34-12-default #1 SMP 2010-06-29 02:39:08 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Is that the actual name, brackets included? I suppose you know you have to escape the brackets to be able to access the file by name? If it is not, please print the actual output, of ls -l and stat. Could the file be a "hole"? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. stupid me! the files I was looking for are in a subdirectory and the files start with the same name of the directory, so "ls" would give me the content of the subdirectory I guess I need some rest sorry for the noise -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Sounds like it is a symbolic link where the original file has been deleted. A sym link uses a different inode from the original file unlike a hard link which uses the same inode. If you do an ls -l is the file type the letter l (ell)? In the far right of the filename, is there a pointer to another file? Do the file permissions look like this: lrwxrwxrwx? If so, it is a sym link and the original file from which the link was created from has been deleted. You might as well delete the file as the data is missing anyway as the data was held in the original file only. Hope this helps, Phil On 01/11/10 07:40 PM, Georg wrote:
