Lionel, This may be indicative of something... When I run the killall command, it returns "inetd: no process killed". What is this telling me? Peter

Hello all,
I'm a real fresh-out-of-the-box newbie here, so bear with me... :)
I recently installed the "minimum system" (7.0 Prof) on my home LAN here, plus some additional packages. I've discovered the rc.config file, and edited it with both YAST and VI, to successfully start up Netatalk, for example.
Now, I'd also like to use Telnet (and later SSH) and ftp. I've installed proftpd and inetd is set to "yes" under the rc.config. I assumed that this would load telnet services on demand. Yet I cannot connect through telnet from my mac over my LAN. I have created a valid login. My portscanner also reveals no active ports except for 80 (apache).
Also, I tried to enable proftpd in the rc.config file, but on boot I got a "port error". I'm assuming maybe this means that another daemon is serving off of 21 - but I don't know.
Just edit /etc/inetd.conf
# ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd wu.ftpd -a ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd proftpd # ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd
uncomment the line with proftpd and comment out any others..
Then run "killall -HUP inetd" , which causes inetd to re-read its config file.
good luck.. :)
Any ideas of routes to take to get telnet and ftp working?
Thanks,
Peter Bethke
PS: I may be a newbie, but I learn fast! :)
