I've noticed that with the new Xfree patch available via YOU for 8.2, they've fixed some of the performance issues relating to video playback using XV. VCD files that used to take 30% or more CPU now take 3-4%. I'll test out DVD's when I get home.. maybe use the Animatrix :) Definitely better! Thanks SuSE! -- Greg Macek | Senior IT Manager Marketing Resources, Inc. it-guy@mrichi.com | http://www.mrichi.com

OKay Greg, so what were the results? I must tell about my experiences here... Stage-1: I had my system on nv/mesa at the start. Pathetic all. Had to use mplayer with vesa driver for movies etc. Stage-2: Installed NVidia/tweaked driver. All goes fine now, sort of. Using mplayer with xv driver [hardware scaling] so all OK. Still screwed up OpenGL. Really big avi [724x5XX] plays painfully screwed up. But all things smaller than this seem OKay. Stage-3: Yet to install the patch. Waiting for inputs from all. Well, my system is a T30 notebook with an ATi Radeon 7500 mobility adapter. I had read and heard from the xine list that there were serious performance issues with XV and the version of X that came with SuSE 8.2, particularly for ATi cards. The patch seems to have fixed my issues. Enabling DMA on my DVD drive made movies smooth again too. I don't know if these issues ever affected nvidia cards or not, so YMMV. I've been using xine to test all video performance. I have mplayer, but don't use it right now, esp. since xine has QT support now. -- Greg Macek | Senior IT Manager Marketing Resources, Inc. it-guy@mrichi.com | http://www.mrichi.com
