Hi, Dave, Just order it from suse.de web site with credit card, they will deliver it to UK without any problem. Also, you can download desired update from ftp.
Hi all.
I'm interested to know whether/why the Update version of SuSE is available through resellers.
I try to buy my Linux distros through the Linux Emporium (ObPlug: www.linuxemporium.co.uk). However, whenever I've asked, they don't supply SuSE Pro Update, only the full SuSE Professional. The explanation given is always "SuSE's distributor won't sell us the update version, you have to order it direct from SuSE".
I've asked this question before, and the answer I got was along the lines of "that's rubbish, other resellers sell the update version".
So, since I'm going to buy 8.0, I asked them again. This time, they specifically asked SuSE's distributor on Tuesday whether they could get the update version. Apparently, the reply from SuSE's distributor was that Update is "Not available to resellers". The guy running LE is pretty well respected, and I'd be very surprised if he were taking us for a ride.

So, could you please give us the definitive answer? Can we buy SuSE Update through resellers? If not, why not?

I believe the update is the full proffesional version minus the manuals. Of course you can download version 8 via FTP in about a month or so. Matt

unfortunately, you will have to wait quite a while before suse will put 8.0 on their ftp site. suse generally waits a month or two from the release in stores before they make the new version available. (which, imho, is one of the few downsides to suse) -- trey

That's not quite the point - I like to use LE because they are a good company, always give excellent service, and I believe that they deserve my support - AIUI, they were pretty much the first Linux vendor in the UK, and have stayed 'true to the cause'. There are other resellers around which might have SuSE Update, but I'd prefer to use LE if possible. If nothing else, they run a very active and friendly mailing list, where I am a regular subscriber (and poster). I'd like to ensure that it continues, and purchasing my Linux products through them goes some way to doing that. Support your local businesses, and all that...

However, I'd like to avoid the hassle of downloading with FTP, plus I get the advantage of the warm fuzzy feeling of supporting the distro that I like... :-) -- David Smith Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com STMicroelectronics Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk Bristol, England

Since you're in the EU: http://shop.mensys.nl/SuSELinux/ http://216.33.240.250:80/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=c96574c4d221820fcd87369a0312a447&lat=1019339504&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fshop%2emensys%2enl%2fSuSELinux%2f Of course if you're determined to buy from that particular distributor, you limit your options. I've seen it several places. This is just one. John
