DVD disk mounting and device configuration
I have a multi-boot PC including Suse Linux 9.1 and 8.1 base, which has connected one cdrw recorder (Yamaha CRW 4416, SCSI based) and one combined dvd+rw&cd-r[w] recorder (HP dvd-writer 100i, IDE based). The latter was used to install the OSs itself, DVD for 9.1 and CDs for 8.1. Suse 9.1 load and launch the content of inserted dvd or dvd+rw disks containing computer files. HP hp dvd-writer disk (/dev/dvd -> /dev/hdc) is mounted at /media/cdrecorder, while Yamaha cdrw recorder disk (/dev/cdrecorder11 -> /dev/sr0) is mounted at /media/cdrecorder11. ------------- Suse 8.1 dvd related questions, which I haven't been able to find answered by help of Suse KB support documents: The 8.1 installation auto-configured both the dvd-writer and cdrw recorder as cdrecorders only. That is, only cd and cd-r[w] disks was mounted and launched, not dvd disks. The boot option hdc=ide-scsi emulation was set. Therefore: # ls -la /dev/cdr* /dev/dvd /dev/cdrecorder -> sr0 (Yamaha cdrw recorder) /dev/cdrecorder1 -> sr1 (HP dvd-writer) /dev/cdrom -> sr1 (HP dvd-writer) There was no "/dev/dvd" symlink available # cat /etc/fstab: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrecorder1 /media/cdrecorder1 auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 I did the following "fixes" for dvd mounting: # rm /dev/cdrecorder1 /media/cdrecorder1 and removed this entry also from /etc/fstab # ln -sf /dev/sr1 /dev/dvd First I tried here to create a /dev/dvd symlink to /dev/hdc (as usually suggested). However this didn't work, because my boot option already was set to hdc=ide-scsi. I understand this has to do with the ide-scsi emulation, but maybe others can explain this relation and what happends? # mkdir /media/dvd Edited and added entries in /etc/fstab: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto noauto,user,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto noauto,user,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto noauto,user,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 This "fixes" allow me to mount and launch dvd[+rw] disks manually, but they are not loaded automatically. Now I wonder why they are not loaded automatically just like cdrw disks? Is there some association somewhere that should be set? Should a dvd group be set? Is my configuration correct, e.g the symlink created, or should mknod be used instead? At last, I am not really sure why my dvd device configuration works to mount and load dvd disks manually and not the originally cdrecorder1 device auto-configuration. Can the added mount option "iocharset=utf8 0 0" be the clue? Any suggestions and feedback are welcome? Regards Terje J. Hanssen
