I have received a reply explaining what the problem was and what I had inadvertantly done wrong. Sorry, everyone, for the error. I now know what not to do with KMail. It has been good to receive a helpful explanation rather than just a complaint and no help. Cheers Keith

As an extra point, it's actually in your own interest to start a new thread - I use a threading MUA, and if I'm reading a thread that gets a bit boring or off-topic, I'll often just hit the 'delete-thread' button. If you've started a new subject as a sub-thread, it'll get deleted, so I'll never read it. By replying to existing threads, you're potentially reducing the audience for your question. In fact, I would hazard a guess that the people who read and delete by thread are more likely to be the experienced people, and therefore best equipped to answer your question.
