NSCD stands for Name Server Cache Daemon. Its primary function is to provide DNS cache services which is useful on dialup connections. Don't use it though if you are running your own bind. Nadeem tabanna wrote:

nscd IIRC stands for Name Server Cache Daemon.
I don't know what it does, but taking a guess from the name, it caches the
results when you look up a domain name. Not sure if that is right or not,
try man nscd. (it might be part of Bind (the named program, not the Unix
routine))

As well as providing a DNS cache, it also provides a user/group cache. Probably more info than you needed... I don't follow. what is user/group cache? just wondering.

Imagine you have a huge directory full of files with different ownerships. Now imagine, that the command "ls -l" has to lookup the user name and group name for each file using an external database (when using PAM). This is where a cache for such information is very useful. :) Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer 90443 Nuernberg, Germany -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
So I should have it enabled even if I am not on the Internet, but look
everything up though /etc/hosts
I could see how that (the nscd) could be a real freind to perfomance when
one does an ls -l on a directory with thousands of small little accounting
files.
Thanks,
Jack

It is a process that reads in your group and passwd files and allows for faster reading of them from RAM.. It can be usefull when your passwd file is getting over 100K or so.. But untill then i have noticed it to be more of a hinderence than anything.. Especially when you are adding a lot of users.. Cya Matthew Matthew King: Network Engineer, Cable & Wireless Optus.
