Also in /opt/kde2/bin ? Indeed I couldn't find any switches to kdm for more verbose output, unlike xdm. What you can try is starce xdm. You'll see a lot of gibberish but normally some lines describing the error should be visible.

I'm wondering if those "no such file.." errors are the cause, but they could be normal... I was kinda hoping there would be some obvous error like a library not found but as far as I can see all libraries can be loaded. (The "no such file.." things are indeed normal, it tries to find the libraries in every directory until they're found.) My strace looks very similar (I've attached it), you're sure your kdm isn't running somewhere invisible? :)
Sorry to be of no help,

Err, could you strace /lib/libcrypt.so.1 (or whichever the ldd on kdm returns). Mine segfaults.. is that normal? -- -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.12 GS/M/E/CS d-- s++:- a--->?$ C++++ UL++>++++$ P+>++++ L+++>++++ E--- W+++ N++ o? K++ w--- O- M-- V? I think it's not abnormal, as you try to "run" a library. Mine aborts, but some other libraries segfault when I try to "execute" them. libc was the only one "runnable" I found, it outputs version information.
