Hi there, Sometimes I run into a process that just doesn't know when to quit. I can use the kill command all I want but it won't do any good. Take for example Netscape. Sometimes it freezes and I'll use xkill to take it out of its misery. When I restart it I'll get an error message stating that another user is running Netscape using my files under process ID 437 (for example). When I issue the kill command nothing will happen. There's also a zombie process running that's equally stubborn. How do I deal with those? -- Yatsen Ng Den Haag, The netherlands yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". I always used to use a 'kill -9 <pid>' until I discovered the CTRL-ALT-ESC-click-on-the-window-you-want-to-kill method. However, I discovered that that doesn't totally kill netscape off (it must be sending a different signal instead of a 9 (SIGKILL)). Because of this I've just moved bad to my old 'kill -9' routine. The easiest way is probably just 'killall -9 netscape'. Well, for stubborn processes, I use "kill -9 {process id}". For zombie processes... I'm honestly not sure. I have not had the opportunity to try to kill the undead, but I hear cremation works well. ;-) Argentium -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

;-) As far as i'm aware, zombie processes only disappear once their parent process has terminated. For example, that zombie netscape process that can't be killed will disappear when you kill the running parent netscape process. We use this list so often to report problems that I wanted to report a success. I received SuSE 6.4 this afternoon, and I had it installed on my Gateway Solo 9300 Laptop in an hour... without a single problem. X, APM, PCMCIA networking, etc. is all A-OK...first time. The only slight glitch was that I had caps-lock turned on accidently when typing in my passwords... it took a few minutes to figure that out. SuSE, ya did a great job!
