[SLE] Ethernet card and DSL conflict. [Rpt]
Hi all [Apologies for posting this a second time. I got no response the first time but I posted it at the start of the weekend, so maybe it didn't get noticed.] I've just installed SuSE8 on a clients machine. It acts as a router for the company (they had an old 133MHz/SuSE 7.1 setup before) and so has two ethernet cards (a Tulip and a RTL8139). But I can't get the system to act as a router. I've followed the standard, by the book installation (through Yast2). I'm using smpppd and pppoe. Problem description: There are three scripts in the /etc/sysconfig/network directory ifcfg_eth0, ifcfg_eth1 and ifcfg_dsl0 They each have the setting to load at boot time ("onboot") but when the machine boots the eth1 card interface returns failed. First the dsl is configured, then eth0, then eth1, which returns failed (if i turn on debugging then I can see that it fails with "no interface available"). At this point neither the internal internet nor the DSL will work. (No interface available). I don't understand why the eth0 interface won't work but thats the way it is. If I now change the ifcfg_dsl0 script to specify "manual" loading (i.e. not at boot up) then when I reboot the dsl ifup is skipped and the eth0 and eth1 scripts return successfully. I now have both cards working but no DSL interface. If I try to run the ifup dsl by hand then it doesn't want to connect to the eth1 interface (it just hangs). The only way I can get some semblance of a working system is: Boot with DSL interface disabled. Change the ifcfg_dsl0 config to "onboot". Run rcnetwork restart. But this is obviously not the way it is supposed to be working... Anyone out there have any clues to what is happening? I've tried everything I can think of. jalal
