Re: [SLE] Re: Recover X [Solved Almost]
A very big thank you to everyone who offered advice on recovering my x configuration.
Patrick It is probably best to run sax2 in level 3 without X running, but once you remove the config file it should start up ok and create a new file. Good Luck Loacation of file: /etc/X11/XF86Config.
This was a necessary first step to make everything else work.
Jesse: Before running sax2, type the following at the prompt as root: $ lsmod This will display a list of modules loaded. The one you are looking for is NVdriver. If the module is not loaded, then load with: $ insmod NVdriver And then run sax2. I have noticed that this helps coerce sax2 into guessing the right card.
Curtis: Use this: sax2 -m 0=nvidia
This got sax2 running so that I could recreate XF86Config
Curtis: After you run sax2 (with the above command) and have a working X server then give the following command rpm -e mesasoft This will remove the mesa drivers that conflict with the nvidia drivers.
System wouldn't let me get rid of the mesa drivers through a console, but yast2 software option killed them, after a bit of complaining about dependencies for some development thing I am not interested in at the moment.
Curtis: install the GLX drivers first with: rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-1541.suse73.i386.rpm --nodeps --force then follow with rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1541.suse73.i386.rpm --force
I didn't use the --nodeps or --force options, but both rpm's reported that they were already installed.
Curtis: Then use your favorite editor (as root) and open XF86Config in the /etc/X11 dir. Change these sections to read as follows:
I made the changes suggested, rebooted and "hey presto" there was everything in kde as it was when I lost X a few days ago.
Curtis: Then after you've booted type switch2nvidia_glx and then in the console type gears and enjoy!
Everything going great, but what is gears? I get the following error: linux:/home/dave # switch2nvidia_glx linux:/home/dave # gears Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key GLUT: Fatal Error in gears: could not open display: :0.0 Does this mean that my nvidia drivers are still not fully working? No, it means that you started your X session as user 'dave' but are trying to run gears as user 'root'. X won't allow that. Either exit as root and run gears as dave, start another konsole as dave and grant permission for local users with xhost +inet:localhost or use sux instead of su when you 'go to root'. The first option is preferable. You shouldn't be running user programs as root unless you absolutely have to regards Anders

I got this same error after running the switch2 script..which by the way you have to edit because the name of the GLX drivers changed. I have attached mine for everyone to look at. It works for me now, but I was getting the same error. And Sax2 just hates this new driver. I had to edit my XF86config file myself..to get the resolution I wanted. :/ -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE
Right after promising me that nothing but encryption keys and .txt files are sent thru the list, this comes out. (In case the systems don't forward attachments, I have listed the name below.) I sure don't know what "switch2nvidia.glx" is, and I'm sure THIS is not a virus, but it sure as heck is NOT a .txt or a key file. The filtering doesn't work. And I still don't need pages and pages of C code on my drive. I rest my case! I will not get into a flame war on this, I'm finished. --doug At 10:50 11/30/2001 -0800, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Because for YEARS we all have posted config files for each other to read. It's a bloody text file. I guess from now on we should put stupid .txt Wintendo extentions on plain textfiles. It is a text file Doug and it's not C, it's sh. Just because something doesn't have a '.txt' extension doesn't mean it's not text...sigh. Doug, please don't take this the wrong way but this crusade of yours has gone from being the mildly annoying avocation of a well-meaning but arguably misguided busybody to a blight inflicted on the good people of SLE by clueless luser who neither understands the issues at hand or wants to. Please, do yourself a favor and either unsubscribe or limit your postings to topics that you have a least a minimal understanding of. Thanks, -- -ckm

The install changed your resolution? Anyways, afaics the switch2 script isn't needed with this version of NVIDIA_GLX. If I read the pre- and postinstall scripts correctly, it will handle all symlinks for you. Presumably the old switch-script would mess things up if it ran, so the only change I made to my system was to set SCRIPT_3D="" in rc.config. The postinstall even handled libGL.so! yay :) //Anders
