I have set up a few systems with 10.3 as Samba Servers. I have AFAIK activated VNC Server and opened the Firewall ports. I have also set the Router to redirect Ports 5800 and 5900. Still I can't get a connection, What am I missing, and what is the preferred client for the Built in VNC...? Windows XP Client tried TightVNC and RealVNC.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Any of those work. You only need one port, but it should probably be 5801 or higher. 00 will be uses by the local Xserver 01 would be for the built in vnc-like server. (Its not vnc its part of KDE). -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've had a bit of an issue with this as well. Seems really difficult under openSUSE. I finally got a connection tonight using both openSUSE systems... http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/20080615_vnc_success.jpg ...it wouldn't connect - even with all firewalls open and a password set - until I'd clicked "allow connection" on the remote side. This is odd, since I often connect to one or more openSUSE computers at work from Vista. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/vmware_xp_remote_suse_1680x1050.jpg (That's actually me using VMWare to run XP, which is connecting to my Vista machine at work via RDP and then connecting to my openSUSE desktop via VNC.) -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've not used VNC in awhile - FreeNX allows a graphical login over SSH2 - more secure than VNC, and in my experience, much faster. Plus, it's -alot- easier to setup and manage. Have you tried opening and forwarding port 5901. I have it working for some time now, and that was the only port needed to be opened/forwarded. Paul -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you tried opening and forwarding port 5901.
After reading this suggestion from yourself and others I changed the forwarding accordingly. So far, I cannot get a connect with TightVNC, RealVNC, or FreeNX. I can connect with putty in console mode. (which is okay) I tried to install on a 10.3 box the x11vnc Server, got an error that it couldn't find a compatible C compiler. I was out of time so didn't pursue it... Don't know why putty will connect and FreeNX not, they both seem to use Port 22 (which I assume is SSH).
I have it working for some time now, and that was the only port needed to be opened/forwarded.

Worth a shot, thanks for the "heads up"...

I had forgotten about that - hadn't used it in about four years. Yes, the server is installed by default and the client is easy to install with an RPM. It even puts a nice icon on the desktop. http://en.opensuse.org/FreeNX_Server_HOWTO The only thing I noticed - and I believe this is why I think I stopped using the client in the past - is that the client can't control the user's session. In other words, when I logged into my laptop from my work desktop http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/20080616_nxclient.jpg as myself, it instantiated a new session instead of assuming the existing session. I don't think I can "look over someone's shoulder" as they work. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
