SuSE 8.1 Install & Network Issue - Help
Hello, I installed 8.1 Pro from the CD's today and during the process when it cam to setting up peripherals, I had both my 3COM and my AIRONET show up in the Network setup. I chose the AIRONET (AIRONET Wireless PC4800), and it installed with standard DHCP settings. Well I was glad to see it come up but sad that it didn't work. Apprently it's an issue: Oct 14 13:32:11 papa kernel: airo: Probing for PCI adapters Oct 14 13:32:11 papa kernel: airo: Doing fast bap_reads Oct 14 13:32:11 papa kernel: airo: MAC could not be enabled Oct 14 13:32:11 papa kernel: airo: Finished probing for PCI adapters Oct 14 13:32:11 papa ifup: Could not get a valid interface name: -> skipped This is a mainstream PCI Wireless adaptor and I trust someone at SuSE reads this. Any thoughts ? We really would like to use SuSE 8.1 on our workstations with these cards, as some remote POPS. Thanks. Dee -- W.D.McKinney (Dee) deem@wdm.com

I was getting this with my land line ethernet. Checke to make sure you have the correct modules for your kernel in /usr/src/ . I had an SMC kernel and a default set of modules, or something like that. HTH, STH
Good point Steven, yet I have kernel sources etc. installed and still it's not getting info with ifup on booting/restarting the network. Says it's not getting a valid interface name. I know this card works under Linux as the same box with the same hardware works with a Mikrotik flash HD, and the Aironet card works great. Mikrotik is a Linux based OS also. Really frustrating as CISCO is mainstream hardware. Dee On (14/10/02 00:31), Steven T. Hatton wrote:

Are the kernel sources named correctly? That was the jist of my problem, I believe. I had an exactly similar error message. ;-) I can't recall off the top of my head how to regen the modules configuration info. It's depmod or some such thing. Have you attempted that? That's how I realized I had the problem with the name.

Have you read all your friendly email from SuSEconfig, and resolved all listed conflicts? When you run depmod is the result silence, or an error? I had a few bites taken out of me there as well. Have you also poked around in the /etc/modules.conf. It's been a long time since I messed with that stuff, so the details are not fresh in mind. STH -- Hatton's Law: There is only One inviolable Law
Thanks for the replies Steven. Silence with depmod and no issues loading the module. SuSEconfig has no errors, and /etc/modules.conf has # end of i386 part for modules.conf alias eth0 3c59x alias eth1 airo So not sure what to ask for this to get up and running ? Thanks so much. Oh, another thing I had happen is that the install wasn't complete when I thought it was. I don't recall the details, but when I rebooted after fixing the kernel problem, I was promted to continue the installation. STH -- Hatton's Law: There is only One inviolable Law
Hey well this finished nicely and I have rebooted to see the changes take place and no problems. I have experienced the need to reboot to finish installs in the past but this one didn't need it. All in everything except the PC4800 is working fine. Dee On (14/10/02 03:19), Steven T. Hatton wrote:

Could this be a GCC-3.2 issue with the driver? Have you googled form related problems? -- Hatton's Law: There is only One inviolable Law
