I cannot connect to MSN with gaim since MS decided to charge external clients for the "privilege" of using MS messenger (I have no choice: most of my buddies are on MSN). But a search on the gaim website indicates that Gaim works fine with MSN protocol 9, provided you use a recent version. I apt-got the latest Gaim rpm, but on launch Gaim complains about not being able to launch my MSN plugin. The gaim website says this is due to msn 9 using encrypted logins, and says : "You did not compile with SSL support. As of protocol version 9, the MSN protocol requires the use of SSL, which gaim provides by either GnuTls or the combination of NSS and NSPR from the Mozilla project. Install one or both of these and recompile Gaim." I have gpg installed, and i use Mozilla 1.5, so should have NSPR. Compiling gaim from source says:
config.status: creating po/Makefile
gaim 0.71

Has anyone managed to do this (I'm using SuSE 8.2). Thanks FX -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux http://www.nibz.org

Download the RPM of Gaim 0.71 from www.usr-local-bin.org. This works here - I have had no problems connecting to MSN yet. I've tried that, and no luck: the MSN protocol is still missing. FX -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux http://www.nibz.org

When you say that the protocol is "missing", what do you mean? That there is no option to create an MSN account in Gaim, or that it won't connect? If the former, there is something very wrong with your setup. If the latter, there's something slightly wrong :-) I'd suggest moving your ~/.gaim directory to somewhere else and try again. You can copy all the old buddies back once you've got it working. The version of Gaim that James is distributing definitely works with MSN ATM - it's happily connected here as I type and I've had various conversations with MSN-using friends since the 15th. So it must be some problem with your system or your internet connection - and as you can send email and (presumably) browse the web, suspicion must like with some config in your system. The ~/.gaim is the easiest one to test :-) HTH John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Valley of the Kings: ransack an ancient Egyptian tomb but beware of mummies!

The former. But I have been using gaim happily for years with the MSN protocol .... Except that it stopped working on October 15, and when I upgraded to the latest gaim, I got this missing protocol message.

Tried that. I get the missing protocol plugin message. FX -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux http://www.nibz.org

The former.
In which case, it can only (surely) be a problem with the Gaim package you downloaded - the MSN plugin is in that package (or not). So, have you tried uninstalling Gaim and installing an RPM from a source that you know includes the MSN plugin (such as usr-local-bin)? If even that doesn't work then there's something very screwy! The ulb Gaim package certainly includes the MSN protocol and it certainly can work with no problems - I have none here. If you downgrade to an old version, does the MSN plugin reappear? This cannot be a problem with the MSN protocol change because that would only show up as an inability to connect, not a missing plugin within Gaim. I don't know about gaim, but may be there is an option to use with configure, like with-ssl or similar. Also, openssl-devel must be installed. FX Fraipont wrote:

Also, openssl-devel must be installed.
It has nothing to do with OpenSSL - if you'd read his mail, it makes no mention of OpenSSL. They use GnuTLS or Mozilla to avoid some issues that there are apparently with OpenSSL's licensing. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.2) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Not that it helps the OP much, but any idea what issues? openssl is under a bsd / apache style license that's about as unrestrictive as you get, isn't it? Cheers Fergus

I don't use MSN, but I can tell you that Gaim 0.71 from my site is built with SSL enabled, from Mozilla - I tested it using a fake login and password - it succeeded as far as validating the password, then returned the message from MSN about needing to have a .NAT passport. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.2) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org
