Hi, I had a problem installing the sound on a Compaq Armada (undocked) in that it locked the machine on installation ... I got round that by not installing it at the time and installing it later. Later I did install it and it didn't lock up the machine so that was fine. However if I power the system up in the basestation it locks ... if I subsequently undock it and hard restart (power off & on) it will power up but ONLY out of the basestation. Anyone got any ideas why this is and what I can do about it? James C. Rocks Equant Archway House Canary Wharf London E14 9SZ

I have a problem and I didn't solve it before getting too committed to things. I have a PC with a 80 GB hard drive. I used Partition Magic 7.01 to put two copies of Win/XP Pro in two, 10 GB C: partitions. I then installed Suse 8.1. The partiton layout I used was: hda9 15.7 MB /boot hda10 384.3 MB swap hda11 5 GB / hda12 5 GB /data1 After installation, Partiton Magic isn't enabled during boot. (I guess that part is technically called Boot Magic as I use to get a menu of which partition I wanted to boot from.) However, I get the Linux version (I don't know if it is LILO or the newer boot manager that is available with 8.0 and above). It does show the first XP partition but not the second partition. When I boot XP, I can bring up Partition Magic up. However PM complains about an invalid boot sector and wants to fix it. I seem to recall reading that if PM is allowed to fix it, PM will not be able to boot Linux. There is something else you have to do first before PM is allowed to "fix" things. I've been running for a few months with this setup now, and reinstalling if I really blow it, is really not a good option. So I need to find out what I should be doing, before I really mess things up. Thanks Tom Duerbusch THD Consulting

I had a similar problem with XP in the primary partition and Mandrake 9.0 in one of the logical partitions, using lilo as bootloader. PM 7 compains about the boot sector because it does not support ext3 or any other journalized filesystems... if you let it fix the boot sector lilo won't be able to boot into linux anymore. However PM 8 does support ext3 fs, does not complain about the boot sector and lets you resize your partitons, including the linux ones (PM 7.0 wont let you do that even if you fix the boot sector); now I use PM 8 with XP in the primary, and SuSE 8.1 in one of the logical partitions, with grub as bootloader. I do not know if PM 8 supports other journalized fs (other than ext3). So my advice is... get Partiton Magic 8, or use another app... (ask one of the linux gurus about those "another app"s). __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. I used PM8 a week ago to make place on my machine with WindowsXP for SuSE8.1. I used the whizard in PM8 to ad another OS, and then choose Linux as the OS to ad. It created a partition in ext2 for the linux installation, and another partition for the swap file. When I installed SuSE8.1, it changed from ext2 to reiserfs. I use GRUB as the bootloader, so I can choose between WindowsXP and SuSE8.1. Works as a dream. Frits On Saturday 01 February 2003 21:39, Marino Fernandez wrote:

SuSE are now selling a bundled Partition Magic 8 with SuSE 8.1 Pro... Costs more than the ordinary pro though. I was most upset though because I'd just bought PM8 myself when I got my Laptop and SuSE 8.1. Had I known, I could have saved some money... And that upsets me, wasting money... :( Paul Cooke ps, don't use the Bootmagic program that comes with PM8... It's useless compared to using Grub and wastes a primary partition as well. You only get four primary partitions per disk anyway... Makes life difficult if you want to have separate "/" and "/home" partitions as well as have XP and an OEM restore partition.

Thanks. In one aspect I like that type of easy answer "upgrade". On the other side, I'm not too happy with paying for another copy of PM when they have yet to answer any of my emails. Paying for no support doesn't make me a happy camper. As far as not using Boot Magic. Sure I will use it. I don't have any operating systems that require a primary partition. I do use XP and have it in a primary dual primary partitions so when a copy gets corrupted (viruses), I can just overlay it with a "protected" copy. I have been mostly an OS/2 user for the last 8 years, so I really don't have much experience with viruses. Tom Duerbusch THD Consulting Marino Fernandez wrote:
