Hi: I uninstalled the SuSE broken Mozilla package (8.1). Then I installed the vanilla one from Mozilla.org. (Why the heck did Suse bother to break it in the first place, I dunno...) When I switched my printer subsystem from LPRng to CUPS, the darned Yast reinstalled SuSE's Mozilla on top of mine, breaking everything. I had to do the Mozilla install all over again. How can this be fixed? I am wondering this also because I am considering playing with Mplayer, which I hear SuSE has also crippled or done something goofy to it, so I want to try a vanilla one. Thanks for comments. -- ____________________________________ Christopher R. Carlen Principal Laser/Optical Technologist Sandia National Laboratories CA USA crcarle@sandia.gov

No, SuSE has _not_ done anything wrong or "goofy" with MPlayer. As
Rob Benton has pointed out, ,what they have done they have done for
legal reasons.
If you want Mozilla RPMs, check out
http://www.usr-local-bin.org . _My Mozilla_ 1.1 RPMs came from there.

Speaking of MPlayer though, I noticed kdebase3-SuSE depends on it. I had planned on recompiling it from source and using checkinstall to make an rpm. If I set the prefix=/usr and --enable-gui will that satisfy the dependencies of kdebase3-SuSE or is there something else? Anybody know?
Yes. -Any- package with the name MPlayer will fulfill the requirement. Hell, you could compile Mozilla but forget to change the name of the package to "MPlayer" and kdebase3 wouldn't care (the real Mozilla probably would though...). kdebase3 just checks the name of the package. So, to fulfill the RPM requirement, you could also just create an empty RPM that doesn't contain anything. On Friday 15 November 2002 01:01, you wrote:

Yeah but will I break anything? :)

It is OK. Just be sure the name is MPlayer (the case is important) and the version number is something like 0.90pre10. I'm going to put online some RPM for SuSE 8.1, including a full-featured MPlayer that satisfies your requirement. Have you done the rpm yet? I'd sure like to try it. -- _____________________ Christopher R. Carlen crobc@earthlink.net Suse 8.1 Linux 2.4.19

Just curious but what problems did you have with the Suse MOzilla rpm? Mplayer doesn't include the windows codecs for license reasons I think. I think all you have to do is copy them to like /usr/lib/win32 ? Someone correct me on that if I'm wrong.

The biggest problem was that there was no "Mail and Newsgroups" in the Window menu. Perhaps I didn't try hard to find another way to use it, but I'm used to using Mozilla for my mail and news, and this was absurd. The second problem which is well known is that Java doesn't work with Suse's Mozilla. -- _____________________ Christopher R. Carlen crobc@earthlink.net Suse 8.1 Linux 2.4.19

With 8.1 you have to install "Mail and Newsgroups" separately from the browser. IIRC (I'm at work now) it's under email clients. George -- Some mornings it just doesn't seem worth it to gnaw through the leather straps. Emo Philips

Uhm, I see. Well, it still doesn't have Java, so I'll be sticking with the vanilla Mozilla. I should probably install the 1.1 rpm at some point, instead of the Mozilla.org package, so it doesn't get overwritten by the ever increasing "intelligence" of Yast. We did not break it intentionally. It's just the fact that at the time of 8.1 there was no Java compiled with gcc 3.2 which we compiled the distribution with. So the incompatibility broke Java with Mozilla. Other distributions have/have had that problem as well. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. I understand that. But doesn't that beg the question: "what is more valuable, having everything compiled with gcc 3.2, or having a fully functional Mozilla?" I have been under the impression that Mozilla is a failrly important program. If the system can't show Java pages, only tech-heads are going to respect your reasons. A typical user will just think it's deficient. Good day! -- _____________________ Christopher R. Carlen crobc@earthlink.net Suse 8.1 Linux 2.4.19

They like to make your life a misery. They appear to be a hardworking team building a beautifully crafted top-whack Linux distribution, but really they're paid by the $YOUR_FAVOURITE_CONSPIRACY_GROUP to spread fear, confusion and dismay around the globe. You should definitely sue. Try asking for a few hundred thousand extra to reflect your emotional distress.

I'm sure you heard that from an impeccable source, right? Their crack crippling and goofescence teams worked deep into the night to ruin it for you. Remember, they're not just stupid, they're evil too. They have no reflections in mirrors and hairy palms.
Thanks for comments.

One of the patches in the MPlayer source (no-source, I mean) rpm is actually called MPlayer-0.90pre6-cripple.dif. They did it for valid, legal reasons, but they did cripple it. Besides, leaving out the main source tarball MPlayer-0.90pre6.tar.bz2 is very strange. Why "cripple" something that isn't there. Or is it there and I just can't see it?
