how to tell which /dev something is connected to
Hi everyone. Is there anyway I can tell which device is connected to which /dev file? Like sometimes the cdwriter atteches to scd0 and other times to sr0. The boot messages don't give it any more it seems. thanks, steve.
Hi, On my machine, /dev/scd0 and /dev/sr0 are the same device. Both are major 11, minor 0. look in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt. Youäll find a list of devices describing major and minor number, and the device they attach to. brw-r----- 1 root disk 11, 0 May 21 14:21 /dev/scd0 and this is the directory listing of a block device with major number 11, minor 0.
