Hmm... well, the gaim project did a fix in the 0.59.1 release to make it work in Perl 5.8.1, looks like they built the binary package with Perl 5.8.1 installed, which is why it wants that library. I'm running 0.59 without the .1 realease in SuSE 8 just fine. There are 2 solutions: Get a Perl 5.8.1 RPM, or rebuild the package on your machine from the source RPM. I prefer doing the later, because I don't like making unrealeased updates unless i really need the features or fixes. HTH Donavan Pantke

Get the source and compile it yourself is another option. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.

May I respectfully suggest that this is the wrong answer for the "typical" SuSE 8.0 user. SuSE 8.0 is not being marketted to geeks but to folks who might otherwise use Windows or Apple-Mac. It would make for a very valuable marketing study for SuSE to poll buyers of SuSE 8.0 and ask them if they have any idea what ""compile" means, if they have any idea how to do such a thing, and if they have ever successfully done so ... and perhaps if they have any interest in doing so or if they bought SuSE 8.0 to avoid such tasks. It seems to me that SuSE failing to make common versions of Everybuddy, Gaim, and many other apps available through a simple and complete (NO dependency errors) YaST update will drive away customers. Even those of us who know how to do compiles are often busy at other tasks and have often found compiles time consuming due to glitches and errors. The inability to find a turnkey version of Everybuddy or Gaim for SuSE 8.0 has probably doomed my efforts to multiply the use of SuSE or Linux of any sort here. Very disappointing. Linux/SuSE has to become vastly more user friendly if it is going to make the necessary dent in the marketplace to flourish. IMHO, YMMV ... doc
I agree with Dr. Colburn. The entire idea behind having several distros is to produce a linux distro that does not require a degree in computer science. Its supposed to offer a good alternative to Windows and not promote windows as a user friendly operating system. regards Leo Dr. David M. Colburn wrote:

Fair enough. But it's an option--this is something it's not in the Windows world. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.

We mostly put on the CDs what is current at the time we make a release. It's a strict policy of SuSE to not make version updates after release if it can be avoided. So if you want newer releases of a software, you either have to wait for the next release or compile your own RPMs. Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de Development SuSE Linux AG private: pth@t-link.de
