Any reason Suse is still using rpm 3.0.6 instead like 4.x something?

IIRC the 4.x series have serious problems with speed when the rpm database gets large. Anyway SuSE's version of rpm is capable of manipulating rpm's created wit 4.x, so there is no lost there. AFAIK, too many bugs, specially for architectures other then iX86. Our RPM can read the 4.X format so what are you missing? Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de Development SuSE Linux AG private: pth@t-link.de

Ever heard of a program called checkinstall? It's pretty handy. It creates slackware/deb/rpms from the Makefile of a source tarball. It's a giant shell script and one of the commands it uses is rpmbuild which only shows up in rpm 4.x. As near as I can figure 'rpm -bb' will do the same thing in 3.x but I've never run into any problems using rpm 4.x so I was curios.

Checkinstall works perfectly with SuSE's rpm 3.x. I have been using it for ages. Charles -- "...Unix, MS-DOS, and Windows NT (also known as the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)." (By Matt Welsh)

Joe said it was part of the Suse distro but I couldn't find it on my CDs so I downloaded the generic rpm off their website and it contained a reference to rpmbuild which isn't in rpm 3.0.6.
Hi everyone .. .. I remember some talk (somewhere) about SuSE 8.1 having better support for Sony Vaios. Has anybody tried putting 8.1 onto a recent Vaio? I'm particularly interested in how the ACPI performs .. I recently heard from someone who owns the same laptop as me, and his machine has died after installing Redhat 8 - almost certainly due to ACPI not being present or not working. sjb

Eh? Checkinstall is part of the SuSE distro, and works very well with the RPM version provided by SuSE. I use it all the time as provided by SuSE with 8.0, and now 8.1. Not sure why checkinstall is an argument for having RPM 4.x... Joe
