RE: [SLE] Suggestion on CD packing
Then please also forward my support *for* the paper packaging, it's so rare for the computer industry to use anything recyclable that it should be encouraged. We have quite enough plastic in the world. Perhaps the scratch issue can be avoided some other way? And in truth, my paper packaging has not scratched any of the CDs... k. p.s. I'd also love a little commandline utility that told you on which CD you could find which rpm... On Tuesday, October 17, 2000 11:21 AM, Lenz Grimmer [SMTP:grimmer@suse.de] wrote:

I would like to suggest a change to the way the 6 (or whatever number) CDs are packaged now. The paper pack has created several scratch on the CDs after a few times of taking out and in. I am handle it with care but it still happened.
Thanks for your suggestions, I will forward it to our product designers.

My two cents on the issue. I thought the paper packing idea was a very novel idea indeed. As Kester pointed out, it is very rare for the software industry to use anything that is (easily) recyclable. I've just got out my SuSE 6.4 CD set and examined the CDs. All have minor (very minor) scratches to them, but Disk 1 has a lot more scratches than any of the others. Perhaps some kind of tissue lining inside each pocket would rectify this? --Lee Tuesday, October 03, 2000, 1:34:03 PM, you wrote: KC> Then please also forward my support *for* the paper packaging, it's so rare KC> for the computer industry to use anything recyclable that it should be KC> encouraged. Here is a snippet from the reply of the product people: [SNIP] Yes, it might be that some small scratches on the surface could be created by taking out and in the CDs several times. But most of the customers do that only one or two times when they are installing. We have long thought of an ideal solution for housing the CDs and we think the one we found is the best. We donŽt like to take a lot of plastic instead of paper because of weight and protecting the enviroment. We always track how many complaints we get for CDs which are out of order and they are really really small in the moment. [SNIP]

How grepping for the package name using the file INDEX.gz on CD1? Example: [grimmer@wiles CD1]$ zgrep pine.rpm INDEX.gz ./CD1/suse/n1/pine.rpm ./CD1/suse/sec1/pgp4pine.rpm Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany Sometimes I wake up grumpy...other times I let her sleep. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Hi LenZ, I think SuSE would like their customer to 'take in and out' their disc for many PCs than using other distro right? The 6.2 paper pack has less problem on the scratch but it fall out easily, 7.0 is the reversed. Through discussion and feedback, I believed SuSE team will find a better way to house the CDs with paper pack. Thanks and bye for now. Dennis @Singapore Hi, On Tue, 3 Oct 2000, Kester Clegg wrote:

Good point. Perhaps it is possible to coat the inside with silicon or
something like that to make it smoother?
