Permission denied for /bin/sh, /sbin/killproc after 8.1Pro install
Hi,
I had a dual-boot system Red Hat/Windows with following partitions:
/dev/hda1: windows
/dev/hda2: swap
/dev/hda5: shared fat32 partition (with all my files)
/dev/hda6: boot partition
/dev/hda7: red hat
What I wanted was the following:
/dev/hda1: SuSE8.1 Pro
/dev/hda2: swap (used by RH and SuSE)
/dev/hda5: shared fat32 partition (with all my files)
/dev/hda6: boot partition (used by RH and SuSE)
/dev/hda7: red hat
SuSE's installer wanted to leave my Windows alone and replace Red Hat
with SuSE so I had to change the partition settings.
I told the installer to not format the red hat partition and told it to
format /dev/hda1 to reiserfs.
I also told to not format /dev/hda6 because that would ruin my RH
system. I did got a warning about this but I didn't see any other way
to accomplish this.
Then the installer started installing the apps I selected and after the
first CD was completed the pc had to be rebooted (before all apps were
installed).
So I removed all media from the drives (the CD-ROM) and rebooted.
I got a boot-loader screen with the options: 'linux' 'floppy' 'linux
safe settings' but after choosing 'linu' or 'linux safe settings' the
boot process halts with a lot of errors like:
/etc/init.d/boot: line 104 /bin/sh : Permission denied
/etc/init.d/boot: line ... /sbin/killproc : Permission denied
/etc/init.d/boot: line ... /bin/stty : Permission denied
/etc/init.d/boot: line ... /bin/uname : Permission denied
/etc/init.d/boot: line ... /bin/splash : Permission denied
/etc/init.d/boot: line ... /dev/tty1 : Permission denied
I had to reboot using a boot-floppy to get back to RH.
Is there any way to get the system to boot?
Have I made some dumb mistake (this is my first SuSE installation)?
What type should the boot-partition be? I selected the only option that
had 'boot' in it (I think unless I changed that back to 'linux'.
TIA

I tried again and was able to read some more of what is going wrong:
(using shift+pg up)
This line is shown before the Permission denied errors begin:
Unrecognised mount option gid
It also complains that fsck has failed and that the root partition is
mounted read-only.
I can login in rescue mode (using the cd) but I don't have a clue how to
fix this...
TIA

This might be problematic... I would use separate "/boot" for each linux, or none at all.
/dev/hda7: red hat

Option "boot installed system" from the cd.

Then you can reinstall, with more knowledge the second time :-) I don't remember now if you had to remove the CD for that first boot or not :-?

ext2: minimun size for a reiserfs is 100 Mb, and ext2 needs no modules. But if you formated that one (/boot), whatever redhat had in there would be destroyed. Check your /etc/fstab file, you might have a "noexec" there. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
