Who was askling about the linneighborhood this morning? I just installed it from the SuSE 7.1 CDs using yast2 in three machines and it runs perfectly in all three for accessing the W2K network on this network. In fact I wanted to say thanks for mentioning that because I didn't know such a thing existed. It's really cool. Cheers Rich

They are running SMB over TCP/IP and not over NetBuei, correct? If not you'd better get your M$ network switched over to TCP/IP ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com

I second this.....make sure your M$ workgroup is using TCP/IP and NOT Netbuei protocols. Did you try looking at the machines under linnneighborhood using the ip address instead of the netbios name? Is the name of the workgroup showing up under the linnneighborhood window? I didn't have to do anything to anything to make it work.... I have W2K server running as a domain controller, and then there's a workgroup for a couple of 98 machines running separately (but on the same network), and then there is a linux machine running a samba server.....and I just installed the linneighborhood and it sees everything. But for sure be certain that you are running a TCP/IP network and not netbuie or IPX or any of the rest. Samba still only works with TCP/IP so far as I know. And that goes for the current versions too. (somebody correct me if I'm wrong here). Cheers Rich
Turn off the ME machine and see if everything works. Then everything does
work you still may have a problem getting the ME machine back onto the
network. Try shutting the network down and start the ME first.
The procedure sounds crazy, but something in ME does not like SAMBA. I have
not seriously looked into it further, but if I were you I would try making
SAMBA work without the ME machine on the net. Get everything else working
first and then screw around with the ME and see if you can figure it out
later.

Yes ya right. I had troubles too. I made a few changes in my /etc/smb.conf file that helped. I am not running ME anymore so I can't be of much help with it. I run samba to authenicate network users, in fact windoze wil not allow use of wife's pc unless they are authenicated via lan. So, some of these setting s may not apply for you. Neevertheless, here they are. os level = 65 # the default is lower. With a higher value here it will enable samba to beat out a windoze machine (even on a perr to peer setup). wins support = yes The client machines have "Use Wins" set to yes and the ip addy of the samba server in the list. Interesting thing is I never had to do this prior to ME and samba 2.10 TO other samba users out there: Are any of you using user level shares on windoze? I can seem to get it working with my smb.conf I'm set for security = user and local master = yes Any of ya can provide suggestions I'm appreciative. anks ambrosius I will make some of those changes tomorrow when i get to work an see Thanks ambrosius , i will make some of those changes at work tomorrow an see if that helps. I have it working here at home but i have only win2k machines right now. have a me machine but its not on lan yet, need to run
that durn cable thrue a couple walls for the roomy can get on the internet. It could be the ME machines at work that are causing the problems. I have 4 of them running there. wish i could get rid of windows but we have stuff that has to run on windows an the ppl are not up to trying new things. thanks again jack
