[opensuse] Fed up with Kmail2
Hi, I am finally fed up with Kmail2. This piece of software is as buggy as it gets and regularly messes up or looses mails. Even for the longterm pain-used Linux user it's too much. - Mails don't show up in the inbox although they are on the IMAP server for hours - Sent mails are sometimes saved in the configured IMAP folder, sometimes in local folders and sometimes Kmail shows them in the IMAP folder but strangely no other program can find them there - Kmail forces to send GPG signed messages as PGP/Mime, what lots of clients which are used in enterprise and governemt environments can't handle and show empty messages - The latest fun - if I deselect "sign message", Kmail2 still tries to sign the attachments with PGP/Mime, which breaks the attachments. Even Kmail2 can't open them from the sent folder any more @Opensuse Team: I have started using Linux in 1996, my first SuSE was 5.2. So I'm really used to rough roads but what you did with 12.1 is the worst quality I have ever seen from SuSE in over 10 years! If I wouldn't be so used to the SuSE structure and Yast, I would have changed distribution and I'm still considering it. -- (o_ Stefan Gofferje | SCLT, MCP, CCSA //\ Reg'd Linux User #247167 | VCP #2263 V_/_ Heckler & Koch - the original point and click interface -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

KMail is well known to be problematic in KDE4... You can't really blame openSUSE on something that is an issue with upstream KDE. If you go to any other distro that is shipping the *same* release of KDE4, you will find similar if not identical issues with KMail. Try an alternative mail client like.. Thunderbird? until the KDE team sorts out the issues with KDEPIM. (and they ARE sorting it out... each release is getting better, but they do have a way to go yet) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

KMail2 ist not the only problem in 12.1, as the list archive and various reviews in the web show. The whole release was composed too fast and not thoroughly checked before releasing. And nobody forced SuSE to go from Kmail to KMail2. -- (o_ Stefan Gofferje | SCLT, MCP, CCSA //\ Reg'd Linux User #247167 | VCP #2263 V_/_ Heckler & Koch - the original point and click interface -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

??? Think about what you wrote there... nobody forced you to use KMail2. KMail2 is part of KDE4... if you have problems (most of which are probably very well documented and have bug reports open on them) then you can either help fix it... or use an alternative - of which there are many. Show me a single release of ANY Linux distro (or ANY other OS by any other commercial OS vendor) that doesn't have list archives and various reviews on the web that point at flaws. You can't. If openSUSE was held back and not released until everything was 100% perfect we'd still be waiting on release 1.0. Not the KDE4 that I'm running (4.6.5) - I had the option of upgrading to Kmail2 (and I did try it on a laptop) but I had to install extra repositories to get it. I'm still (happily) running 1.13.7 and afaik it is still available via zypper. KMail2 is basically a vacuum cleaner (i.e. it sucks) but it will get better. Eventually. -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Kmail 2 should not have been shipped with openSUSE 12.1, we should have remained with version 1. This decision has caused lots of pains to many people, forced to downgrade to kmail 1 or use thunderbird instead - after losing emails. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. There are more Mail clients to make a workaround on these issues. Those will help you to keep productive. But chances are by reporting bugs and problems with KMail2. It will help to improve it and make the next version stronger, available, trustful, secure. If you look inside KDE-PIM It's more than just KMail2. We have many important changes on Akonadi, Nepomuk, Qt, and much more. All affecting the performance and they need the right tune in to work together happily. Indeed. But the problem for openSUSE is not that kmail was faulty, but that openSUSE was released with a _known_ faulty component that was known that would cause lost data for users. That's my only worry. That my trust in openSUSE was thus broken. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I already understand your point and discomfort. I could agree with you because in some way openSUSE fame about usability, stability, trustful and availability is affected by those issues in some way. It was not a big surprise for me because I am always testing and considering it's a work in progress. All other distros are having similar issues with those changes too. In my "own" point of view we are a beta testers at different levels disregards we call it "final release", "release candidate", "beta", "factory". On the other hand, openSUSE is giving a big jump to the next generation tools (systemd, snapper, grub2, etc.) and Desktop Environments (at the same time) are doing it too (i.e. Akonadi, Nepomuk, etc.). Including KDE some code rewrite from scratch.Chances are to mess up. Just a small excuses. At this moment I will not mention GNOME changes. At the end, I am sure we will overcome these drawback to redefine a leadership position on community Linux world as it was in old good days. I don't know about kmail in 12.1 since I use Tbird for many years, but I am quite happy with 12.1. I think it's better and easier to use than any of the 11.x releases. I have found few difficult issues with any programs on 12.1. Since 10.3, it's the release that I've found best put together. Just my 2 cents. Kmail2 is a gigantic pain. I've spent numerous hours to get my mails back and to get a usable setup. My brother and father, both long-term kmail users, abandoned it for Thunderbird. I can understand that complain about it and even blame Opensuse 12.1. Christoph -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Agree with you it was working for me until a recent upgrade, now it won't start. I switched to SeaMonkey today. It works. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
