Annoying pop-ups/previews on desktop and in some browsers SuSE 9.0
Hi, everyone. I've recently installed SuSE 9.0 and have an annoying problem with pop-ups (previews?) on my desktop and in some browsers. Whenever I hover over a desktop icon a large, yellow box appears with a description of what's represented by that icon. In some cases I get a preview (e.g., if the icon is a link to a .pdf document I get a small graphic of that .pdf page). For this to happen the icon cannot be highlighted and nothing can be open **and** maximized on the desktop. (Pop-ups will appear if an application is open but minimized). I also get small pop-up descriptions when I hover over some links (but not all) in some websites (but not all). I cannot figure out why this occurs in some but not all websites and only with certain links. Typically I see this on list-serv sites. When I hover over one of the postings I'll get the first few words of that list-serv posting. I have tried unchecking every "tool tips" box I have found in the Yast set up. To the best of my knowledge I've been through everything in Yast but no luck. Where ever that check box I want to find may be hiding.... we'll it's hidden!! :o) Can anyone help me turn off these annoying pop-up (preview) boxes? Sorry that the list won't allow me to attach a screen shot (.png) so you can see exactly what I'm trying to describe. Many thanks. Gil

Unfortunately maximum configurability comes at a price. If I understand you correctly then the following should solve your main problem. Open a Konqueror window Go to the "Settings" menu select "Configure Konqueror" A window will open w/ the "Behavior" pane active. Uncheck the "Show file tips" checkbox and then press apply. That should do it. There are other settings available which let you fine tune your configuration (ie the web page /link previews you mentioned), The solution I described should get rid of all of the File Tip popups, to just get rid of some of them you might want to look at the "Previews & MetaData" section of the "Configure Konqueror" window as well Have a great day - -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAceRmBwgxlylUsJARApqKAJ94Rxwn6EYRJLhRRK3eAJFArtEyYQCeMWlo 8OxmPjOSN1df7HwGQAVLjDU= =cwCk -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

David, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it did not solve the problem. I already had the "show file tips" box unchecked. After receiveing your message I rechecked it, then unchecked again. Still no good. Tried several times. The pop-ups are still there. Re: the "previews and meta" sections.... I see that there is a list of checked boxes in the "previews" section. Which of those might I uncheck to try to solve this problem? Frankly, I don't know what most/all of them refer to. And where is the "meta" section that you referred me to? Where do I check that meta information? Thanks for your help. This is most bizarre. I've compared KDE and Konqueror settings between my computer and my wife's, but can't figure out why hers does not have these annoying pop-ups and mine does. I also don't think this is Konqueror-related since I get the annoying pop-ups on certain links in other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox. My wife does not. Right click on the desktop and select the Configure Desktop option. Under the General tab, toggle the Show Tool Tips option. Hit apply and then close the context menu. You can also do this from the KDE Control Panel. -- Donald Grayson Systems Administrator SportPaint, Inc.
I've got a GPS that will provide "pulse-per-second" timing; and I'm wondering if anyone has implemented NTP with the pps drivers for SUSE 9.0? There's a patchkit that needs to be run, but it's for a "generic" 2.4.21 kernel, and it fails (several .rej files) on SUSE 2.4.21-199. Thanks in advance! Clay Jackson clayj@nwlink.com

Except that on my wife's computer (also SuSE 9.0) she does NOT get the pop-ups! I've looked at every setting I can find trying to see where her configuration is different from mine. I can't find any difference. So where ever the box is to uncheck it must really be hidden. This is really frustrating. Thx. Open 'Control Center' from the main menu. Choose 'KDE Components' from the menu on the left of Control Center. Choose 'File Manager' from the new menu that replaces the original on the left. Choose the 'Behavior' tab in the right hand pane. Uncheck 'Show File Tips' and click 'Apply'. -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies

I think this probably depends whether the page authors have included 'title' or a similar element in their html, eg: Links The pop-up balloon will read 'Handy Links'. Yes! Jim, that worked. Thank you so very much for supplying this great information. On checking our 3 machines I found that two (including the one on my desk) had "effectnotooltip=false." Changing that to "true" got rid of the damned pop-ups. And when I checked my wife's pooter I found that her setting was at "true," thus she did not have the pop-up problem. Now why her setting was different than that on the other two pooters?? Who knows how that happened. But I would never have found this solution without your help. Thanks Jim, this worked. You have to restart KDE though before it takes effect. I'm not sure yet what caused the change either both combined or just the one by itself, but I'll find out. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south.
