[opensuse] kde bug 165712 suse 10.3 - 32bit, 10.3 - 64 bit, 11.0 - 64 bit
my free nerolinux trial is about to expire and soon I will not be able to write to a dvd with my usb connected drive. whenever k3b is started, it rings out the exact error as bug 165712, in both the 32 and 64 bit version of 10.3 and the 64 bit of 11.0. The ability to write to the dvd drive with k3b was lost with some update some time in the last six months, but i can't pinpoint it because the write function is seldom used. K3b is not the culprit, tried all available suse and packman versions, same result. has anyone found an answer or workaround for this "invalid" bug? http://bugs.kde.org/show_activity.cgi?id=165712 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think you should have opened the bugzilla with the distro, as the problem is not kde's fault, and you say it started with an update. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. did you try growisofs? if it's only a k3b bug, you should be able to use command line (or other interface, like brasero) jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

OK, it looks like automount is grabbing the device before you can do anything with it, this usually gives k3b a few problems because as soon as a legitimate ISO image is detected the burning software usually starts having a firefight with automount over who can use the device. Usual cure is to turn off automounting when burning (with anything either the command line or K3B)...

Ok, so what you have to do is to tell your desktop to do NOTHING when you insert a DVD via USB. Maybe you have to disable all actions for insert USB disks. If that is impossible, you might have more luck using gnome, or one of the other desktops that do not automate mounting (you can call k3b from there). You can manually umount the device, but as soon as you start burning it will detect that there is a dvd that could perhaps be mounted, try to mount it, and crash! k3b burning session goes to hell. so now that the"bug" is somewhat documented, is it really true that there is no workaround for it? googling finds quite a few simialr threads, but no solution. Yes, it is true that there are too many good candidates to have to look at, but this is a basic functionality issue that shouldn't be there. And the fact that a not free piece of software can skirt the issue should be a challenge for someone knowledgeable in these things, no? d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ciao, Marcus
Since this an old one, what is to be done in order to not have this problem? This "old" bug crept on my 64 bit suse in ....2008 as best as i can determine. Yesterday I also verified that the "old" bug exists in 32 bit 10.3 and also in the brave brand spanking (b)new 11.0, 64 bit version!!!!! can't be sure it is k3b even though nerolinux has *no* problems with precisely the same setup, i can run it right after I close k3b, yet the error messages point toward some sort of handshake error between two or more pieces of software. I was led to #165712 thru yet one more google search just yesterday. And I accessed it and pasted the link straight from the ffox url entry, only <ctr>l-c and <ctrl> -v were used. There I saw the same error message that appeared on my screen when I called k3b from a console window, after a dvd-rw was inserted in the drive and plugged to a front usb port. the error message reads: ......................... plain@103-32-sb1:~> k3b plain@103-32-sb1:~> (K3bDevice::HalConnection) initializing HAL >= 0.5 Mapping udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_ATAPI_DVD_DD_8X16X8X16_D EF1064A6FC1_0_0 to device /dev/sr0 /dev/sr0 resolved to /dev/sr0 /dev/sr0 is block device (0) /dev/sr0 seems to be cdrom bus: 11, id: 0, lun: 0 (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: init() (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: CD Mastering (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: CD Track At Once (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: DVD Read (MMC5) (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: DVD+R (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: DVD+RW (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: DVD+R Double Layer (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: DVD-R/-RW Write (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: Rigid Restricted Overwrite (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0 feature: Layer Jump Recording (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: dataLen: 60 (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: checking for TAO (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: checking for SAO (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: checking for SAO_R96P (K3bDevice::ScsiCommand) failed: command: MODE SELECT (55) errorcode: 70 sense key: ILLEGAL REQUEST (5) asc: 26 ascq: 0 (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: checking for SAO_R96R (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: checking for RAW_R16 (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: checking for RAW_R96P (K3bDevice::ScsiCommand) failed: command: MODE SELECT (55) errorcode: 70 sense key: ILLEGAL REQUEST (5) asc: 26 ascq: 0 (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: checking for RAW_R96R (K3bDevice::ScsiCommand) failed: command: GET PERFORMANCE (ac) errorcode: 0 sense key: NO SENSE (2) asc: 0 ascq: 0 (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET PERFORMANCE length det failed. Not nice, device has done a disappearing act...(sense key 2 errors are logical unit errors i.e. problems with or communicating with the physical device). After this K3B (and wodim/cdrecord) go haywire.... I would point the finger at the cause of the result of your scanbus results. For some reason the SCSI or USB is loosing contact with the device and this suggests this is *not* a KDE issue but more likely a kernel or driver issue if swapping cable or cleaning does not help...

Don't know if you noticed that nerolinux *just works* on the same setup, after k3b fails all i have to do is unplug and reinsert the the usb connector or recycle power on the external drive! Also, I noticed that the scsi bus number floats around, the dvd is seen on bus 14, other times on 13, other times on 11. since the physical port i use is the same and no other usb devices are added or removed, shouldn't the bus number stay the same? d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You rather confirm what I suspected was happening. Changing device definitions that is the probable root cause of the problem and I would agree that it is preferable that they should remain constant. I have seen similar behaviour with USB/Firewire disk devices before but so far only with slightly flaky hardware. (There are three things I would expect to give trouble from time to time on any OS, USB devices, DVD/CD drives and WiFi and you have two out of three here). - From the sequence you showed what seems to be happening is that the linux burning software initiates a communication sequence, which either deliberately (or unintentionally) causes a device reset and the device reappears somewhere else or just hangs. As far as K3B/wodim are concerned the device has 'gone way'. Whether it is the kernel modules involved, the burning software, or interaction between these components that is the cause is a moot point. I do not think this is specifically a KDE issue (as the wodim -scanbus test strongly indicated). - From the description of the Nerolinux product I would suspect that Nero do not use the standard Linux drivers but their own (as I believe they do within windows), and can cope with this. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. my free nerolinux trial is about to expire and soon I will not be able to write to a dvd with my usb connected drive. whenever k3b
Hello: This is not the answer to your question, but: Can't you reinstall the newest nerolinux demo? Would not it extend the trial period?
