[opensuse] Evolution stuff
The latest release of Evolution from openSUSE has fixed a problem where calendar invites did not get parsed properly and added to the calendar. That now works again. I'm happy! I have two questions about intended behavior with calendar emails that I don't feel I see a specific answer to in the places I have looked: 1. When I receive a calendar item that is a meeting, I can press a button that I want to attend, or refuse, or whatever. If I do so, Evolution zips a message off to the sender of the calendar message. However, I eventually get a message that the mail could not be delivered, like: This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. Delivery to the following recipients failed. user@wherever.com This user exists and I send normal mail to them. The response comes from the postmaster at wherever.com, which is running Exchange. Should Evolution be able to respond properly? I do not use the Exchange part of Evolution, as I do not get any of my mail from such a place. But someone sending me mail may have it so. 2. I think I know the answer (negative) but I have to ask: can Evolution directly share it's calendar with someone running outlook? And, can Evolution access someone else's outlook calendar? I realize this may not be the best list for this, but I thought since I was asking about Evolution as configured/compiled/delivered with openSUSE, this was a good place to start. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. I'll have to upgrade an try it. I'd never gotten the calendar to work at all against our Exchange 2003 system. In fact.... ...Evolution doesn't want to connect at all now. I hadn't tried it in a few months.

If you're sending a calendar item, you'd probably need to do so as an attachment. Either an .ics (iCalendar) file or some other format. (The .ics file works with Outlook, Notes and some other calendar programs.)
2. I think I know the answer (negative) but I have to ask: can Evolution directly share it's calendar with someone running outlook? And, can Evolution access someone else's outlook calendar?
That is doubtful. Typically, shared calendars are done only on a same server basis. For example, if you have an Exchange or GroupWise server, you can allow shared calendars among those on that same server. I do this with my staff - they all have direct access to my calendar. However, I cannot share or see calendars with my wife, who works for a different entity.

The thing that was fixed was not really directly related to an exchange server. It was that messages with a ics mime attachment were not properly parsed. So the item was not added to evolution's calendar. That now works.

This is an automatic thing in Evolution. When I get the calendar item in a message, Evolution formats the message in such a way that I can accept, decline, or whatever. There are buttons for this in the place it shows the message. If I choose, say, to accept, the item is added to evolution's calendar, and evolution sends a message to where the calendar item came from. I do not have any involvement it this message. But it fails as I reported in the OP. What I am trying to determine is if evolution should be able to do this but it is broken, or if evolution should not even try to do this.

I thought outlook could share calendars with users on other systems. Is it really true that they must all be running on the same Exchange server? That seems like a crummy limitation. But, hey, MS... I am interested in two things: (1) sharing my calendar with outlook users (2) accessing outlook calendars. I would think these are possibly independent tasks. So maybe one can be done and not the other? -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O.
