I am trying to understand a few things about SuSE utilities and I just want to make sure about the following. YAST --> Software --> Online Update: will connect to suse via ftp and "Get patches and correct and improve your existing installation" Those that mean "system files" or will it also include updates to the installed applications? YAST --> Software --> System Update: "Update your entire system" If I go there, it asked me for my cd's, so, what is it gonna update if what is installed on my hdd was taken from my cd in the first place? Am I right if assuming that it must be used in case of screwed up the previous installation? BTW, I read the user guide and it doesnt provide detail information about it. I also tried looking for a man yast or a how to file and couldn't find any in the 3 cd's, and didn't know where to look for it in the hdd. I briefly browsed suse.com for a couple of keywords and no relevant information was showed. What is the right place to look for that kind of info for the product? __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. The YOU mode YaST Online Update

Security and critical bug fixes are applied. YOU will download the patch rpms and apply them
YAST --> Software --> System Update: "Update your entire system"
When next SuSE version comes and you have the CD's then you will use this to upgrade rather then making a clean install -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

Are you sure? That has never worked for me. What would be the procedure
for that?

Well I have been upgrading like that since 6.4 except 8.0 . Your other option is start with the CD and choose Update ofcourse -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

OK, that's interesting. Because when I tried to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1
with that option, I just got something along the lines of "Wrong media.
Please insert the 8.0 installation disk" (Not an exact quote, but words
to that effect)

I think it only works if you boot from the CD or floppy, not from the already installed system; main reason is the full update is applied to an stopped system, at least while replacing kernel, libraries, and such. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
