I don't think 9.2 contains something that basically forbids it to run on that box.
Martin
The only thing I have found is that it (9.2) takes appreciably longer to load at boot than 9.1 But, I do have a full system together with a load of stuff that I could really safely trim back But it really shoudl load on a 166 chip with that much RAM....I would have thought.
Yes, when I tried it first, I think I gave enough time to get up, but I'll give it another try (tonight) will report then.
But shouldn't it response to
or even <Enter>? And it doesn't!
So, I tried it now and waited for 45 minutes. I guess after that time it should have responded in some way or the other, but it didn't. Any further suggestions? Martin

Well, I haven't really watched this thread so if this was already said, well, sorry: Have you tried a manual installation? In theory that box should be able to run. Oh, and this may sound stupid, but for ... 9.1? The 64 bit version was on the other side of the disk, have you tried usiong the other side? I once did try installing when I didn't know which side was which the one to use. It does say something about you're using the wrong side but if it's freezing you may not get to that point. -Allen.

Thanks Allen, what I reported is as follows: BIOS Report is as follows: Pentium MMX, 166 MHz 192 MB main memory Primary Master Maxtor 91360U4 (13.6 GB) Primary Slave Maxtor 92732U8 (27.3 GB) Secondary <none> Card-01 OPL3-SAX Sound Board Adaptec AHA-2930CU SCSI BIOS v1.34.1 SCSI ID: 4 TEAC CD-R55S SCSI BIOS Not installed A report of "yast2 hwinfo" (SuSE 9.0) is also available (~80 Kb). The installation of SuSE 9.2 hangs at the following last line:
SUSE Linux installation program v1.7.17 (c) 1996-2004 SUSE LINUX AG <<<
The last thing I could see it doing, was changing the Font on the Textscreen. After that it is doing nothing anymore. That even happens when I try to install it by using "Installation (save settings)" in "Text Mode". I have two versions of SuSE (7.3 and 9.0) installed and running on that box, so it is definitely something inside the 9.2. Originally I installed it using the CD's. This time I used floppy disks. But the result is allways the same as reported above. With the floppy disks I intended to install it using nfs where the installation source is copied to another machine, but it never gets beyond the above reported point. Maybe I should take out everything that I do not need to install it, maybe then it would get up. Martin

Memory requirements to do install have grown (unfortunately), 9.2 needs 256M at least. Although installed system runs just fine in lower memory (without X11, of course) HTH, -Kastus

Hi Martin. The general concensus of opinion from some far more knowledgeable friends of mine all seem to think ACPI may well be the culprit here. It would make sense being as it is on a board that supports a 166 Pentium. So I assume the board is around 5 or 6 years old at the earliest? Have you tried the install without ACPI enabled? I remember seeing it when I installed my 9.2 it's about the third one down 'I think'. -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR

I even used the fourth down which is: apm=off acpi=off mce=off barrier=off ide=nodma idewait=50 i8042.nomux psmouse.proto=bare and I chose "Text Mode", "NFS", "Verbose" and "Driver" right now again, with the same result. I was thinking how I could activate the swap devices which are there (-Kastus wrote that I would probably need 256 MB main memory). So far I thought that it would be activated automatically. I wouldn't even want to install X (at least not starting it) since I intended to use it as a server only, even though I would like to use YaST2. Martin

Martin, this really is most puzzling. Please keep us informed if you try again by activating the swap devices. I for one am very interested in the result. It will certainly influence my choice of installation when I come to set my own 166 board up. Just a thought. How about installing 9.1 then updating the kernel and any other packages that you will need so that it is to all intent and purpose the same as 9.2? Or is that not a possibility? Sorry if I've missed something by suggesting that. -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR

Kevan, I do not have the 9.1 set of CDs and DVD (only the 9.1 live CD). I have 9.0 installed on that box. So, do you think I should try to update/upgrade it from there or can I download the right 9.1 images from somewhere? On the other hand, how can I activate the swap devices, if it isn't done automatically? I mean I don't seem to ever get to the stage where I can do it. Or can it be done through a kernel boot parameter? I was looking into the options of that but I didn't find any such option. In the meantime I tried a boot as before (the save settings one) with the additional options "mem=nopentium pci=nobios" with the same result as before :-( It's quite stubborn, isn't it? Martin

Now I tried SuSE 9.1 (Live CD) and SuSE 9.3 (Live DVD - I inserted a DVD-drive in the meantime). 9.1 is giving me the same result as 9.2 already. 9.3 moved over that point, but is right after telling me that it wants at least 256 MB of RAM and I don't get the chance to activate the swap there either. So, the next step will be, to install a bit more RAM. Martin
In the past I have found installation issues during Linux installfests.
One issue is that the installation from DVD hangs, but installation from CD
on the same system succeeds. (Note that I currently do not have hardware at
home that can do DVD installation from the layered DVD, so I do hard disk
installation after I make a copy of 9.2 on my laptop at work.
Another issue is things like ACPI. That can also affect installation on an
older system. You can easily turn off ACPI and API support.

Thank you Jerry, I don't have a DVD drive in that box. For more information please read my other mail, right before this one! Martin
