A file indexer is an optional part of Nepomuk. Nepomuk is an optional part of KDE (required by Kontact et al). Hope that keeps things straight. No, I have no idea what nepomuk is; but it is not running or installed.

Tracker performs the similar functions under Gnome, where it is being integrated into many apps. Zeitgeist is a layer on top of that that monitors desktop events and stores them in Tracker, to answer questions like 'What was I listening to while replying to mailing lists last week?'. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of the Achievements system, whereby Tracker and Zeitgeist watch what I do and gives me jokey awards for it http://seilo.geekyogre.com/2010/08/omg-user-awarding-system/. We suggested having something like this for openSUSE contributors, but having it right there on the desktop is much more accessible to all.
