[opensuse] Kmail, Firefox and konsole do not run
After my last zypper dup I have lost the function of at least KMail, Firefox and konsole.Can use xterm and if I start in this konsole I receive the following info: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZN9QListData11detach_growEPii With some tricks i was able to start Opera and went to the net. Seems to be a growing problem. As Yast and zypper also stopped working I have a real problem. I have now the kernel 2.6.35.1.1-default running but also the latest kernels from KOD have the same problem..Does somebody have an idea how to get the system up and running? The source of the disjoint isn't obvious, but the problem is definitely your libqt4 version not being that one that built your libkdecore4 version. Tejas, I appreciate the help. I did what you suggest not long ago when I changed from KDE4.4 to KDE4.5, but I've tried it once again and there is no proposed change to libqt4. I'll include the ouput below (which was complicated by the fact the the packman repo wouldn't refresh). As a santy check I went to the KDE_Release_45 repo with a web browser and the libqt4 version shown there is libqt4-4.6.3-8.1.x86_64.rpm, which is what I believe I currently have installed. See the "firefox doesn't start" thread from July on this list. We didn't get a satisfactory conclusion there yet, but I don't think it's related to KDE 4.5 since the reporter was using 4.4.4 then. Can you see if disabling plugins helps here? If not I'll have another look at it next week. I've disabled everything (plugins, extensions) I can think of. I've even tried starting with the -safe-mode option. Firefox starts fine, but the message is still there whenever firefox shuts down. I'm not sure if this is actually causing any problems, but I know that ocaasionally firefox won't start for me either, and sometimes it behaves strangely (the kde file picker dialog doesn't always seem to work within firefox for example). I can't help think this current problem is related somehow. Will, I've looked at the thread you pointed out and it seems to be exactly the same issue/problem that I am currently experiencing. I'll try to summarize briefly here. As near as I can tell - all of the KDE packages (libqt4, libkdecore4, kdelibs4, libkde4, etc) are from the KDE_45_Repo[1] - Firefox, mozilla-js192, mozilla-xulrunner192 come from the Mozilla repo[2]. - The error message in konsole appears when closing firefox even if plugins are disabled or firefox is started in safemode. - Sometimes firefox doesn't start. In those cases there is no message on the konsole. However, after starting firefox in safemode and then quitting, firefox can be started as usual, but the error message appears when closing. - If there is already an instance of firefox running then when a new instance is started in konsole there is no error message when that new instance is closed. Any suggestions on where to look next? Will, It seems that maybe libproxy1-config-kde4 is the cause? (see information below). I uninstalled that package in YaST (there seemed to be no dependency issues) and now firefox seems to behave normally. It appears to start reliably (although that problem was always intermittent so I can't say for sure at this point). At least the error message goes away when closing normally. I also notice that this package does not exist in the KDE45 Release repo, only in the OSS one, so it seems likely to be the problem. Hopefully that helps. plugins-0.4.3-1.3.src.rpm Size : 23152 License: GPLv2+ ; LGPLv2.1+ Signature : RSA/8, Mon 05 Jul 2010 05:34:57 PM MDT, Key ID b88b2fd43dbdc284 Packager : http://bugs.opensuse.org URL : http://code.google.com/p/libproxy/ Summary : Libproxy module for KDE configuration Description : A module to extend libproxy with capabilities to query KDE4 about proxy settings. Hmm, Will, This might be the same issue I am seeing after this mornings updates on 11.3 i586. Running k3, if I start firefox my box hardlocks. Have to power-off to recover - no ctrl+alt+anything, no ssh in - it's locked tighter than a drum. If i unplug the usb mouse and plug it back in -- it stays dead. I guess you have unwittingly installed a different libqt4 on top of incompatible libkdecore4 packages.
The remedy is to make your repos sane and update. If you can't figure it out yourself, attach
* zypper lr -d * rpm -qi libqt4 * rpm -qi libkdecore4
output and we'll tell you what to do.

Hmm, Will,
This might be the same issue I am seeing after this mornings updates on 11.3 i586. Running k3, if I start firefox my box hardlocks. Have to power-off to recover - no ctrl+alt+anything, no ssh in - it's locked tighter than a drum. If i unplug the usb mouse and plug it back in -- it stays dead.
I have nothing but sane repos on this box. Are these the right versions?
I think so but I can't tell because you omitted the -d part of the zypper command and the Distribution part of the libkdecore4 rpm information. I don't think KDE4 and Qt libraries can have much influence on Firefox on KDE 3 hard locking your box. To exclude that possibility, uninstall the KDE 4 firefox integration: mozilla-xulrunner191-kde4. It is probably something else related to the update, did it include a kernel update? Will

No kernel update, I have stayed with 2.6.35.1-1-default from head. The 2.6.34
openSuSE kernels cause dropout with my Atheros wifi. 2.6.35.1 has been rock
solid. 2.6.36rcx won't boot :(
I'll get rid of mozilla-xulrunner191-kde4 and report back. Thank you. The info I
failed to post last time is below. All I can say is -- Oops on the omissions ;-)
