I'm guessing you have your repos set to point to "current" instead of at a specific version. (Look at the content of text files in /etc/zypp/repos.d) Using "current" is fine, but unusual unless you are running tumbleweed. Are you a tumbleweed user? If so, tumbleweed uses the "current" repos as pointers to the latest released version and what you see is expected. If you aren't a tumbleweed user, then it is unusual that you are using the "current" repos, but it is your choice and upgrading your packages via zypper up should be fine, but the only tested way is to disable your repos other than OSS, OSS-update, NON-OSS, and NON-OSS-update and run "zypper dup". http://en.opensuse.org/Upgrade Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

All of them has 12.1 in the baseurl, except for openSUSE-12.1-12.1-1.4.repo, with baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-stable/repo/oss/ Can this be the culprit?

No - or not intentionally/knowingly... Thanks, Andras -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No, KDE:Distro:Stable has nothing to do with this. The mail just meant that KDE:Distro:Stable is the maintenance project for 12.2's KDE packages now. -- Will Stephenson, openSUSE Board, Booster, KDE Developer SUSE LINUX GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstraße 5 90409 Nürnberg Germany -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I know that, I'm just pointing to the similar word "stable" that may mean the last stable version of the oss repo, which would then be 12.2 and cause the OP problem. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Absolutely!
Ah! Wait a minute..... I wonder, with that number of files to install, if KDE 4.8.4 is being upgraded to KDE 4.9.
I don't think so. Apart from not having KDE, there are lots of packages waiting to be updated that have probably nothing to do with KDE (see below). Besides, there's this message: The following product is going to be upgraded: openSUSE So I think it's a safe bet that more than KDE is involved...

that sounds reasonable *if* this is a new install, which was not connected to the net during initial install, or was not allowed to update as part of the install process....and, has not been updated since installation.. that is to say: the install disk images for 12.1 was 'frozen' in November 2011 and there have been LOTS of updates along the way since then...so, if you just installed (or are just not first running in the updates) there are LOTS of packages needing to be updated..
I guess it has something to do with the release of 12.2.
no, nothing to do with 12.2
Is it necessary to upgrade? Is this a safe way to do it?
(having read your "All of them has 12.1 in the baseurl" in an earlier post today--running "zypper up" will not upgrade your system to 12.2.. if yours is a fresh install of 12.1, but 12.2 is what you wish for: it would be best (i guess) to do a clean fresh format install of 12.2......OR do the "zypper up" on 12.1 and _then_ follow one of the upgrade paths from 12.1 to 12.2 as outlined in these: http://tinyurl.com/35p966c http://tinyurl.com/6kvoflv http://tinyurl.com/7l4m2td -- dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

that sounds reasonable *if* this is a new install, which was not connected to the net during initial install, or was not allowed to update as part of the install process....and, has not been updated since installation..
But it's not... It's been getting updated daily since March or so.
I guess it has something to do with the release of 12.2.
no, nothing to do with 12.2
Then I wonder what... Anyway, I changed the baseurl in openSUSE-12.1-12.1-1.4.repo from http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-stable/repo/oss/ to http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.1/repo/oss/ and things seem to have gotten back to normal. [...]

yes, that makes sense....i must admit i didn't read your words carefully enough, and missed the full address including "...distribution/openSUSE-stable/..." which you and i both now know is *not* the same as ".../distribution/12.1/..." *and* obviously the two do not contain the _same_ packages.. what i wonder now is how your system got to be pointed at "openSUSE-stable" rather than the default "12.1" ??? maybe a pbkac bug? -- dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
