Can anyone offer any clues? Under SuSE 9.3, in either runlevel 3 or switching to console from KDE (<Ctrl><Alt><Fx>), I can login and the system shows me I have mail and when my last login was. But it immediately then logs me out, with no other messages and no new messages are added to /var/log/messages about this. It happens whether I login as root or a normal user.
