Hello Everyone: This is not directly related to SuSe but I thought someone out there might guide me in the right direction. If you want, so the list does not get cluttered with non-SuSe content please send email to me directly. I was surfing and notice on linux.com the following script for bash: Want a clock on the top of your terminal? PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\0337\033[2;999r\033[1;1H\033[00;44m\033[K"`date`"\033[00m\0338"' Where can I go to learn the syntax for this script, since I am new. I like the idea of having a time and date at the top of the terminal but the script puts a time and date in black and is highlighted in blue. The blue makes it hard to read. I want to learn the syntax being used here so I can change the color coding, to make it easier for me to read. Thanks a head of time for you assistance. Bob Barish

Where can I go to learn the syntax for this script,
O'Reilly sells a very good book on Bash scripting. But most of what you are seeing above are 'control sequences' that cause the cursor to move about the terminal screen and to also set the colors. That really isn't Bash scripting but requires a lot of knowledge about the use of ASCCI control sequences. The O'Reilly book probably doesn't spell that out. I would do a search on the web for terminal control sequences or something close to that. since I am new. I like

There is a HOWTO specifically aimed at doing all sorts of exotic (and often pointless!) things with your bash prompt. Look for "Bash Prompt Howto", if you installed the howto's from your CD then you should have it on your disk. Otherwise go to www.linuxdoc.org. -- Regards Cliff
