Get Video-DVDRip and transcode (and all the packages listed as requirements) from http://packman.links2linux.org Ordinarily I would recommend k3b as a very nice GUI, but there seems to be some problem with it and the latest version of transcode. Perhaps in the next release...

We install mplayer from Packman, and use the mencoder program available in that package.
