I'd like to configure this printer (HP laserjet 1200) with CUPS. The printer supports native postscript and also works with the ljet4 ghostscript driver (I've been told/read). Whats teh best way to configure this printer? I have a ppd supplied by HP. Do I configure it by forgetting baout yast and going to the cups web interface http://localhost:631/admin , or should I use yast, or the apsfilter SETUP program (lprsetup). Thanks.

Hi, To install a ppd file in cups is quite simple. Make sure you have installed the cups-driver.rpm (This sets up the directory structure for all the different printer manufactures). Then install the ppd file under /usr/share/cups/model/<manufacturer>/ i.e. to install a HP ppd file install it under the following directory /usr/share/cups/model/HP/ It is probably best to restart cups /etc/init.d/cups restart Then reinstall the printer using your browser http://localhost:631/admin Also you should check the options under the "Configure printer" tab. Hi, Sorry for the delay in answering but I generally don't stay on line for long as I'm on a dial-up connection. No you don't need to install the drivers but it is easier. As I stated in my original e-mail when you install the cups-drivers.rpm it sets up all the directory structure for the printer manufactures. More than likely the ppd will be included with the drivers disk. If you don't install the drivers rpm then I think you have to install the ppd file under /usr/share/cups/model/ sub-directory. Check to see if it exists an d there are some ppd files. Regards, Graham Smith _______________________________________
