Have you tested if the download was 100% ok? try using md5sum to verify Greetings, Dominique

Yes, I forgot to mention that I used the CD to install my laptop so I know it works. Also, I just installed Gentoo on the PC so I know everything works there too. I'm just not sure how to debug this. I'm sure this install CD isn't happy with some hardware I have. Jack

I'd suggest you try to disable ACPI. Or, what helped once at mine, was to change the PNP OS Setting in the computer's bios. Greetings

Hi Jack Have you tried with failsafe option on the install CD startup? It should remove the more 'dangerous' features of the installation kernel. If that works, it will be a case of isolating the option that's causing the hang from the others. My (installed) failsafe option look like this. kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 vga=normal showopts ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off noresume selinux=0 nosmp noapic maxcpus=0 edd=off 3 If you want to see the full list of parameters, take a look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt. There are quite a few! Good luck Pete

Yup, tried all options available from the install menu. I guess I'll have to look more into this.

Will do, thanks!

Last hint; try "Failsafe" and add irqpoll as additional parameter. What is your hardware? Cheers -e -- Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org)

Installation -- Safe Setting on the 10.0 CD includes irqpoll as an option.
What is your hardware?
Tyan motherboard with a Mylex AcceleRAID 170 card. jack

So if "irqpoll" does not help: try to switch to console 4 in time and report the last messages. Cheers -e -- Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org)

The last two lines provide vender information for the DAC960 driver. Then it freezes. Prior to that, it's loading the USB stuff (devices, storage, etc) *sigh* Well, not sure what happened, but I shut the system off for 5 minutes and tried again. I'm able to install. Sorry, for the noise... jack

There is a "Failsafe" boot target, created exactly for such obscure hangs. Cheers -e -- Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org)

Switch to tty4 and have a look at the kernel messages... Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, http://hennevogel.de "To die. In the rain. Alone" Ernest Hemingway

Can't as the system is hung/frozen.
Youve said it freezes at the point where it tries to find the info file. You have plenty of time before that to switch consoles... Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, http://hennevogel.de "To die. In the rain. Alone" Ernest Hemingway

Right.. Looks like it's hanging on the DAC960 driver. How can I disable loading the scsi subsystem when booting? I tried add noscsi as a boot option. Thanks

This could be a problem with SMP.. have you tried the option *nosmp* or *max_cpus=0*? Probably not the best trick to install the computer but worth a try

No luck. I think the DAC960 driver has issues on the 10.0 CD1. I'm going to try the 9.3 CD1 and see if that helps. Thanks, Jack
