My trusty old Laserjet III has finally died after years of faithful service. It's therefore time to replace it with the latest trendy model. I'm on a very tight budget so can any of you wonderful fellows recommend a cheap Linux compatible laser printer. I imagine even the crappest model on the market today can out perform my old Laserjet which I've been very happy with so I really don't need anything fancy, but it must be able to print full page graphics and be compatible with Linux and Windows. Cheers, Sean.

Anything that is HP compatiable should be okay. I guess 600x600 is considered low end today. One thing to consider is toner etc. With something like the HP you'll pay more for the printer but it might end up being cheaper for toner. My Fuji printer cost less then a HP would have and gives me better performance but toner is harder to find and more expensive. Luckily it lasts quite a while so the price per page isn't an issue. Pay close attention to what needs to be replaced and when. Those costs can add up quickly. I forget the model but one of the printers I was looking at required major changes when you ran out of toner. The cost quickly out weighed the lower cost of the printer. I think you needed to replace the drum and the toner. Nick

Hi Sean, I suggest that you have a look at a Kyocera. The running costs are far lower than any other laser printer I have looked at. You only need to replace toner. The drum is waranted for 3 years. Don't just go on the actual purchase cost of the printer, the running costs is the thing that bites. I had a Texas Instruments Printer at one stage and i t was going cost me about the same to get a new drum & toner cartridge then to get a new printer. The drum on this machine only did 20,000 pages before you had to replace it. The other thing I do not like about some of the cheaper printers is that they do not use a proper paper tray. When storing paper vertically it tends to curl and slop everwhere. I prefer that the paper is stored flat. Regards, Graham Smith ----------------------------------
