[opensuse] Intel 845 problem with 11.1
Have just upgraded a PC with Intel 845 onboard graphics, from 11.0 to 11.1. Initially tried installing KDE4 and it was REALLY slow, so then changed to Gnome, which didn't seem much better. Have now gone back to KDE3 (whatever is default for 11.1 - and uninstalled KDE4 and Gnome) and initially it SEEMED better, but after a bit of use, have realised it is very noticeably slower than when 11.0 was installed. Apart from the playing with GUI, the rest of the system is very basic, with very little apart from the basic installed. I have read quite a few emails re problems with the Intel 845 graphics and the latest X system, and did notice when I had KDE4 installed, that I was missing (read: they were black) some icons in the system tray... but apart from that, nothing else noticeable. Has anyone got any ideas on fixing this up?? Thanks, John. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you 'officially' reported it as a bug? I see at least one bug for 11.2 and the i845 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=506699 Try - disabling ACPI in your BIOS disabling ACPI at boot, for your kernel ["acpi_osi=! Linux" or "acpi=off" reconfiguring X from scratch [sax2 -r, backup your old X config first, of course] check your accelmethod, is it EXA or UXA? Do other people report that as being appropriate for an 845. Of the top of my head I think i845 should use UXA

Yea, that will help [not]. Most likely the problem will track the hardware across distributions - I've seen this many times. They are all packaging X, etc... 99.44% of the exact same software. Distro hopping is a complete waste of time. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

WRT Intel video hardware that statement is false. Going to a different distro can often get you a slightly different X version, which can be all the difference in the world between X working acceptably or not. IIRC 845G worked quite well in 11.0, but wasn't made to work at all for 11.1 until after 11.1 went to GM, and may never yet have been fixed for those with bling-enabled. Check Bugzilla and this list's archives for posts/comments by Lynn Wilson (who has 20 845G systems) to see if maybe it did. I had to update the xorg to get it working initially: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1/ But I think opensuse have fixed it since then so maybe just a yast online update will be enough. Maybe not. I have read reports of other distros working perfectly re Intel graphics on the same machine, out of the box. Why I have no idea. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I've "suffered" Intel gfx card drivers with openSUSE and had no problem whatsoever with other distros (ArchLinux and Debian). Hardware: - Dell laptop - Asus R2 - MSI Wind - Acer ONE All of them with Intel GPUs and issues with openSUSE 11.0 and 11.1. Switched to Debian and/or Arch ... problems dissappeared. E-mailed the xorg openSUSE mailing list because I saw the issue closed in bugzilla but haven't got a reply yet, and that was a long time ago. So maybe distro hopping is not such a bad idea. Wasn't in my case for this hardware with Intel GPUs. Right now I'm using ArchLinux and UXA with KMS. Works perfect, but IIRC, 845 isn't supported in the new UXA acceleration method. Well, have gone with Ubuntu (or maybe Kubuntu...) Installed Ubuntu and it worked quite well, then also added KDE (yes, 4.xx) and it STILL works OK (Yep, it's my wifes PC, so speed isn't everything, but it DOES have to work...), so I am going with that.... Thanks for the suggestions, John. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
