Sound Card Problems
I'm using Suse Linux Professional 9.1 on HP D530 Desktop, and I cannot hear any sound. Everything seems OK from the point of view of the hardware; in fact, I tried installing Windows OS on a disk partition of my PC and in this case the sound works fine. I suspect there is a sort of incompatibility between the sound card and the Linux OS, but looking at YAST, the hardware seems correctly recognized and configured. However, if I try to reproduce a sound, even the bell sound, I don't get any error message, but no sound comes out. The name of my integrated sound card are: 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) My office mate has the same Linux OS on a HP EVO D310 and he has never experienced problems with his sound card, which is a 82801DB (ICH4). Anybody can help? Thanks, Beatrice

You might want to try playing around with the alsamixer settings. I've had similar problems in the past where it turned out the automatic volume settings had set my AC97 volume to 100%, and since I didn't have an AC97 compatible soundcard.... Anyway, in general I've not had very good experiences with SuSE and the volume settings for my soundcard. In both 9.1 and 9.2 I had to edit them manually to get my sound working (on all 5 speakers). Thanks for your advice, but I tried to change the volume settings using both the alsamixer and KAMix with no success. Any other ideas? Beatrice On Tue, 1 Mar 2005, Pieter Hulshoff wrote:

Use alsamixergui. It provides more, possibly all, of the options your sound card has to offer. alsamixer or KAMix provide just the basics which are fine once you get the volume options they don't show changed. Stan
That was it, it works fine now! Thanks a lot, Beatrice On Tue, 1 Mar 2005, Stan Glasoe wrote:

Hi Beatrice, Based on the following: <snip>
My office mate has the same Linux OS on a HP EVO D310 and he has never experienced problems with his sound card, which is a 82801DB... <snip>
Maybe someone on the list has your exact setup, so it's obviously reasonable to post your question here, but why haven't you invited this "office mate" to coffee -- using spill proof cups, of course -- to conduct a side-by-side comparison of your settings? Aren't you two getting along? :-) It's just a thought... - Carl -- ____________________________________________________________________ C. E. An aside here: Is there any documentation on what all of the sliders and buttons DO in alsamixer, or what they represent? I have experimented many times, back & forth, and never knew exactly what was happening or what the "dots" signified, and why they changed when other "dots" were selected. Luckily, dogged "experimentation produced the desired results. (I think) Bob S.
